Basically is there anything you can put on spur rubs to help? Or just leave alone?
Thanks

depends if sore or just broken hair, be aware that some horses can be particularly prone during coat changes - tend to leave alone tbf after using some sudocreme if sore.

Going forwards use leather boots (not suede chaps ;)) and metal rollerball spurs ;)

I use rollerball spurs in both UA DR and BE. I like smooth metal rollerballs but pony doesn't so we have compromised on the little plastic rollerballs and they've always been fine.

My horse gets rubs sometimes when he is changing his coat, more so in coming out of winter into spring than now. If I'm not riding in spurs he gets leg marks, so I wouldn't worry too much unless it's sore. I'd put Sudocrem on if it is.

Thanks you both. Have made me feel a bit better as felt terrible!

Honestly, my mare looks as if she's been thrashed if you just tap her with a schooling whip a few times throughout schooling - she marks so easily. She's the same if she rubs her bum on a fence - her skin comes up in raised marks. Some horses really do mark a lot easier than others, so I wouldn't beat yourself up over it so long as you know that it's not down to misuse of the spurs. :-)

My husband's horse would get spur marks at coat change time and my husband did not even wear spurs. One year he even damaged through the skin (usually just broken hairs) and we traced it to a few broken stitches on the seam of his boots making a tiny rough spot.

At coat change time we would fit the horse up with a bath towel under the saddle, so he was protected. My husband felt awful, but it was just the time of year, no problem the rest of the time.
