Spur marks

Wiggy arrived with a little spur mark on one side. I think he'd probably done quite a lot of school work at sales livery, having not done loads before. There was a little scab to begin with which came off and looked quite sore after I rode him in the school. A few days of sudocreme and it healed to decent, healthy skin but his coat doesn't seem to be growing back.

I'm really worried about it opening up again so am just hacking at the moment so I don't have to use so much leg and I'm deliberately keeping my legs as far forward as possible to avoid it. Any tips on getting the coat to grow back please? I was also thinking of putting some surgical spirit on it to toughen the skin - is that a good idea or is there something else I can use?

Expensive but I recently bought a spur guard band and coat is now perfect. Annoyingly i had rubbed horse’s side by wearing my short boots with no chaps. Beginner error !

I’ve been using mtg plus on my boy after he lost his hair from rain rot and their was hair growth in like 3 days
It’s supposed to make the skin healthy to facilitate hair growth
Could give it a try
Very oily unfortunately so leaves a greasy mark

I'm hoping this will be a one off and I won't need a band if I can get it healed up properly but will definitely get one if it's a recurring issue.

I noticed on one of the videos of Lari jumping that his rider was using one and when I first had him he developed slight marks which made me think I'd have to invest in a vest but fortunately not had too as the pro rider keeps her legs stiller than me!

Aloe vera has been known to repair deeper layers of the dermis, in comparison to other topical agents. It being water based soaks in deep into skin. I always use this for any skin repairs. It is more likely to help return of colour to the hairs when they regrow.

Vit A/retinol oil and vitamin E oil are also good skin/scar repairing treatments.

Personally id use aloe first for a few days/week to get deep repair happening, then use the oils as a homemade mix.

Apply Apple Cider Vinegar on the scar - it must have the " mother " not normal ACV.
Its great for human hair growth and will soon have the scar covered with hair again.Plus its very cheap.

I’ve been using Contego on the bald bits my mare had rubbed out and it definitely helps with hair regrowth. It’s a dermal wash so can be used for any skin irritations or cuts. It doesn’t sting and soothes the skin.

I use mtg on the mane and tail and it is great I just would be wary putting it on sore skin it might irritate.

I marked Mr D, he seems to have a very sensitive coat when his coat is changing. I felt terrible but nothing about my riding had changed! I made sure my boots were free of grease, stopped wearing spurs, applied a little vaseline where his coat had rubbed and he healed very quickly. I'm back wearing spurs and he's been fine since. One of my trainers told me that it was very important to keep spurs clean and to remove any greasy residue from boots, some horses do have more sensitive coats than others.

I use MTG Plus too. I can check the label but I'm sure its ok for broken and sore skin as one of the uses is for irritated skin and sweetitch damaged coats. I'll double check the label later on

Don't use spurs?

You must have both missed the bit in the OP in which the OP states that these are old spur marks on her new horse from before she bought him.
I didn't miss that. The post reads to me the OP won't be riding with spurs anyway so the marks will just go away anyway. She doesn't need to ride out with her leg off?

Yes, the mark is from a previous rider (possibly at the sales livery) using spurs but now that there's a bald patch, it's rubbing when I use my leg without spurs. I haven't and don't intend to ride in spurs. I just want to get the hair to grow back and the skin to toughen up so it doesn't happen again and I don't cause him pain. Thanks for all the suggestions of things to put on it. I started with some Aloe Vera last night but have made a note of the other things too.
