Before you all shoot me down I have worn spurs many times!

I am finally being forced to buy some of my own and am wondering which ones I should get? I have always ridden in the standard dressage/Prince of Wales without really thinking about it.

I am going to be riding my forester, who has never been ridden in spurs but been told by my trainer many times that he should be. He is either very sharp, or very unresponsive, should I go for the same sort or a roller ball type? Or other?...

The other horses I ride are fine in the spurs I use at the moment, so they don't worry me :)

Please can you recommend some?

I would offer you all some of my chicken & mushroom pie but i've eaten it all already...

HAPPY FRIDAY :)

I must say I've only really used POW's as well :) The plastic roller-ball spurs seem to be becoming more popular as they are seen as being 'kinder' and are very unlikely to mark (not that ANY spurs should IMO). I'm not sure if they are 'legal' for RC competitions as I have heard different opinions, but they are BD/BE legal :)

How tall are you in comparison to your NF? If your legs don't naturally hang by his sides you may find a pair of swan necked spurs would be useful for refining leg aids.

I have 2 sets of spurs
1 set has a rounded ball at the end kind of like these:

& the other set is more of your standard spur like this:

I tend to use the rounded ones as I just need the extra bit to get my horse attention (once she knows I've got them on she goes much better). I only use the longer "sharper" ones when she's being very unresponsive - she doesn't like them very much & I often work her in them for ~20mins, then take them off or switch to the rounded ones.

I am quite tall on him ... Photo to show :)

Do the swan ones point up or down? Just google searched and they're shown both ways!

Jenki.. thanks for the links :) The second ones are the ones i'm used to riding in, but the top pair seem like they may suit him more?

Thanks!

I have roller ball spurs - plastic ones for daily use and metal ones for competitions. Ive used them for PC ODEs, HTs, rallies etc and BE. I really rate them :) Ive never ridden anything that showed an adverse reaction to them though this could just be coincidence! :D. Ive noticed however since Im leggy that Ive having to lift my foot to utilise the rollerball on my mare so am going to try moving them a little higher on my boots and if that doesn't work perhaps progressing to the swan neck spurs rhino suggested for DR :).

I have just swapped to the metal roller ball types and we are getting on far better with these. As others have said it is a good in-between when you only need a little extra.
