So... My riding instructor has recommended I get some! I have ordered a pair of 20mm offset ones from DH.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom for me for the first time I try them out? Or things to think about? I take it I just apply a normal leg aid, or can it be more subtle now?!

Sorry, I must sound silly but I have been riding for 12 years (on and off) and never used them! I think I've managed to convince myself they are mysterious things that I don't know much about! Thank you.

Blimey ! They sound quite long for starters

I have a set of 'dummies' that are about 1cm long with a ball on the end...and they make enough difference for me.

Basically, you shouldn't be using the spurs all the time....just when needed....so you need a secure lower leg that stays in the correct position, and you adjust your position to bring them into play when necessary

Hehe!! I think technically they are "kiddie" length!! 25mm seems to be standard adult length. I saw a pair of 35mm which scared the life out of me!

Thanks that makes a lot of sense!

when introducing a horse to them i try to be very aware of my leg and use it gently and increase it by degrees, generally you know when they feel the spur as you get a little reaction like a tail flick or small 'twitch'.

as long as you have good control of your lower leg you'll be fine.

20mm isnt the smallest but its not very long either so it should be ok.

Thanks, I know he has been ridden in spurs before by someone else. He wasn't best chuffed about it, but he isn't particularly forward going! I have worked on his forwardness a lot and he is much better. Now we think they will help refine his canter a bit more. My leg is nice and steady, so I look forward to seeing what effect they have!

Thanks everyone!
