spurs

I have some fairly long ones and use them (or did) for showjumping and xc. Essentially to make my aid clearer, especially if horse lacked confidence at any point on a course. I rarely ever use a whip these days and find the horse responds better to a clearer, more definite leg aid.

Al rides almost everything in a pair of spurs, just little, bog-standard ones with the rubber tip.

Because they're not needed until you need to back up an aid, at which point being able to do so promptly and easily helps the horse learn to move off the leg correctly...

I currently ride all mine in spurs, either rollerball ones or swan necks (I have little horses, and stupidly gangly legs), because it means I don't have to bang and "shout" with my legs. But I don't have young horses at the moment, they are all fairly advanced and appreciate small aids.

I ride two of ours in spurs - usually sprenger ball-end ones but sometimes I use a pair with a shorter neck on them. I find that I'm a lot more aware of my lower leg when I'm wearing them :o

J is so much more responsive to my aids with the longer spurs so I don't have to nag at him. There's nothing worse than having a horse that's totally dead to the leg (in my opinion).

Little plain stubbly ones usually to define leg aids if something is a bit dead sided, although i do have some 'mean' looking long ones. I can bounce the long ones with force off my hand and leg without causing pain, they're only for the especially dead ones!

Theyre roller ball ones and for me are a tool to help me refine my aids or reinforce " youre going forward " sj or xc, at the moment im not using them on any of my horses.
