my instructor has told me to get some spurs for when i ride a particular horse to give her more encouragement and to help flying changes and extended trot etc have more impulsion. (she knows how good she is so sometimes can be a bit lazy!)

I'm a bit stumped as to which ones to buy? I've never used spurs simply because the horses haven't needed them, and so I'm looking for some small ones that won't mark her sides. I've looked at the Sprenger economy ladies ones and cheaper ones but there are SO MANY to choose from I don't know where to start!

Thanks everyone in advance!

I've had the ones in Gunnerdogs post and they fell apart, i much prefer the ones with steel rather than rubber balls. However, I think a lot depends on how well you use your leg, the roller balls and the very small spurs can easily be used too much and deaden the horse, whereas if you have a very solid leg position, a longer spur gives you much more refinement from a very light touch. Personally, I'd ask my trainer for guidance as he/she will know your riding, the horse and exactly what you want to achieve from wearing them.

Thank you all for your help! I'll look into the rounded end ones as they seem the best. I have a pretty solid leg position and this particular pony is trained to Grand Prix and has been to the pony Europeans so with her it's more about refining the leg aids in the more challenging movements so that she doesn't have an excuse to just go round the arena in collected canter!

If the pony has been trained to GP, been to pony europeans and you are riding at that sort of level, then I would take the advice of your instructor as there may be more appropriate ones to the rollerballs which are my default recommendation for anyone I don't know of what I assume is a basic level on an open forum like this.

I have both roller and normal ones and I find my horses react differently to them. I have one that won't tolerate my 'normal' spurs but will go very nicely with roller spurs. My other horse doesn't like or react to the roller balls but goes very well in the normal spurs.
I personally would get roller balls first to see how your horse reacts and just get used to wearing them. If you find they aren't enough then maybe go for the plain normal ones which are a little more 'pokey'.
