Personally I think it is brilliant. I have no sound on my pc so can't hear the full story. I am guessing he rescued the squirrel. Good on him if he did. A good friend of mine in the past who worked as a vet nurse for a charity ( not the R one) had a pet squirrel which she had raised since it was a kit. It was very tame. It was kept as a pet as they are not allowed to be released into the wild as they are classed as vermin. So rescued grey squirrels ( if they survive) usually end up in enclosures in wildlife sanctuaries. I also rescued a squirrel kit some years ago, but sadly it did not survive. Some eejit had rescued it from a riding school. Took the thing home and put it in their outhouse or outbuilding when the animal was obviously sick. Furthermore instead of taking it to a vet or wildlife rescue they took it back to the school and just let it go, bloody numpties.
I took it home with me and gave it to my friend ( with the squirrel) who was quite happy to take the animal on and get it treated. Unfortunately the animal died as it developed pneumonia. I know a lot of people may not like squirrels ( grey) but I really wish people would have some common sense about them if they feel the need to rescue an animal and if you are going to do it then do it properly! I had been told that the animal had got wet and cold when it was first rescued. If proper advice had been sought at the time it may have lived.
But personally I find them fascinating to watch. Ok so they do kill fledglings and will take eggs but don't a lot of us have pet cats that do exactly the same. I know there is a debate that has gone on for years where naturalists argued that the grey drove out our native red squirrel. No it was us that did that. Not the greys. We took away habitats that the shy and more reserved red squirrels thrived in. We populated areas making it more difficult for the reds to migrate and expand their population. Greys are more adaptable and that is why they have survived in greater numbers. They tolerate us humans better and are omnivorous and don't necessarily need specific habitats and seeds/nuts to survive. They have thrived on our hand outs of nuts and seeds we put out for the birds in our gardens.
I do like them. They are funny and intelligent and are very adept at solving problems/puzzles in order to obtain food as highly advertised on many tv programmes.
I enjoyed this video immensely and thought it was lovely to watch

ps sorry about rant. It is just that grey squirrels are close to my heart and I know a lot of people persecute them for what they represent. At the end of the day they are just an animal trying to survive as we all are.

You have your viewpoint on the matter and I have mine. We will certainly disagree on this matter then. They are not native that is certainly true. They feed entirely different to the reds. Greys are just more adept at living alongside humans than the red squirrels, hence one reason why their population is much greater than the reds ( human interference aside that is).

You are right but there has been some serious research on the breeding forum into the hybrid horse/squirel called a Sqoursey. There was much depate over its jumping ability.

Some members of this forum became so addicted to the concept they had to set up a self=help group.

And I should be in bed have a huge party tomorrow. nuts.

Lol very funny. We need some light hearted entertaining posts on here to lighten things a little. That made me laugh

Enjoy your party.

Is there any scientific evidence to back up the claim that grey squirrels actually 'push' red's from their habitats? Just wondering that is all.

Thank you Stencilface I tried to find a link for that.

Greys are larger and more disease resistant than Reds.

Only good thing about this is that there is more meat on a grey!

Well all I can say is that if it is just mainly due to a virus which the reds are more susceptible too then that is not a valid reason to say that greys are pushing reds from their habitats.
Who even brought up the subject about eating squirrels because I know I didn't and neither did the OP. The original post was in relation to a builder rescuing a squirrel and his relationship to it.
Wit and sarcasm really don't go together now do they.

Natural progression of thread to cover angles related to original theme

Understand?

I'm not apologizing for my attempt at humour

I would gladly try Squirrel meat.

Greys are larger, stronger and have the ability to carry more fat, they adapt a lot faster than reds to changes in habitat and as a result win in competing for resources. There is a reason they are called tree rats!

I take it you don't like grey squirrels then? Whoever would have guessed it lol **whistles quietly to oneself, whilst thinking maybe I should give squirrel meat a whirl**
