squuuuee trailer is coming tomorrow- tips on keeping it safe

So tomorrow we are bringing back our horse trailer :D a lovely Big Ifor williams 510 model :) lovely trailer with space for tack. Now with so many trailers being stolen my anxiety is through the roof at the thought of it being nicked ! We dont keep the horse at a yard but on private property so most of the time there is someone home to monitor it. We were planning on keeping it on the drive but you will just be able to see it from the road where a gap in the hedge is so decided to move it round the back and out of the way.

Apart from it being hidden round the back , they would have to go through 2 gates and risk their chances in the back garden with Holly who wouldnt think twice about attacking someone who is breaking in. But as far as putting locks on the wheels and tow bar what would you advise ?

It will be insured and i think it is data tagged ? ( i think that is what it's called) it has the old owners postcode on it at the moment but we were planning on having this removed and ours put on it with some stickers perhaps Tessy bears name ? just to make it stand out or maybe a certain design on the side of it.

I currently am working my way through a packet of Jaffa Cakes for anyone who gets this far :)

It depends how much you want to spend and if you mind spending ages removing everything.
I have read the crims sometimes deflate the tyre with the clamp on to remove it then put the spare in its place, so I remove the spare when I leave the trailer in a vulnerable place like on the road outside my house.
Make sure you put the clamp on the rear wheel.

Dont mind spending quite a bit and time isn't an issue with removing it rather that than to wake up to find it gone :( Oh really ? Thank you for that tip and yes we were thinking a nice big bulldog wheel lock on the hind tires :)
 
I recently got a trailer and that was (is) my biggest worry. It has a hitchlock and a wheel clamp (on the rear wheel) and I plan to have it sign written with the pony's name. Mine is kept on the yard so there is someone there all the time but it still worries me. It's insured and I have complied with the requirements of my insurance so I guess I'll just have to hope I've done enough!
 
You can get a thing called a bulldog T bar which I was going to get if I parked my trailer permanently at home.
There are also the trailer covers that ifor Williams do. They can prevent a thief from seeing how much security you have on your trailer which could be enough to out them off. They are very expensive, I got one but took it back as I found it too difficult to get on and off. They are ok for leaving on your trailer if you won't use it for several months but I couldn't be bothered to put it on and off every week. You can get padlocks with an alarm that go off if they are tampered with, they are quite reasonably priced.
 
I read safe the other way: safe for the horses:) So I'd recommend that if you've got no proof that it has been recently properly serviced you take it to an IW dealer and get it checked out and serviced. They can recommend security options as well.
 
My trailer is wheel clamped, hitch locked and chained to the ground with a huge chain that is set in half a ton of concrete. We then block it in with our cars as well. There is also an alarm on it.
 
I keep my trailer at home and remove and lock the partition in the garage. If the trailer is stolen then they have to show the trailer to an IW dealer to buy new ones who will check the serial number against the list of stolen trailers. (or go to the hassle of stealing partitions from another trailer!). Hopefully, it's easier to nick another trailer with all the bits in it.

I did the same when I had a trailer - concreted a huge chain into the ground, and used a high security alarmed cable which went off like a banshee if cut! Cable went through the hitch lock, and wrapped round the a-frame, so that thieves couldn't get all the non-noisy stuff removed, and hitch up the trailer without cutting the cable.
