Had a smashing time on Saturday attending a ODE with my boy, the second one this year. I took it fairly easy because the ground was boggy with all the rain we’ve had and because the ground had taken a bit of a battering in places, 110 horses had ran before me, some of the tracks crossed and it was deep in the wood despite the ground staffs best attempts they are not God at the end of the day. I also took it steady because my horse has recovered from a suspensory branch injury and although he has been back in competition without a glitch for many months now I wanted him to have a nice steady round. The last thing I wanted to do with him was gallop through thick mud.
He was brilliant on the day and I was so proud of him. I was still glowing the next day really pleased that he’d tried so hard and enjoyed himself so much. The following day he had a saddle fit and the saddle fitter was impressed with how well he looked and how nicely he was moving and my partner said he looked really well!
So when someone later that same day asked me how I’d got on the day before and I replied that we’d got 29.5 in the dressage and clear SJ and one stop XC they seemed to be genuinely pleased for me. So why then when I said someone had gone past me as we were going to slow did they feel fit to comment about why I was going so slow and then laugh at me. When I explained I was cantering in places and then trotting in others because the going was a little deep in places and I wanted to look after my horse and not take the chance of wrecking him by galloping through deep going they replied “ Well I wouldn’t event if my horse had suspensory problems”.
He’s been fixed. Its low level competition, unaffiliated, 80cm. It’s for fun, not to win - I have no chance with all the time faults we incur through trotting over the jumps and in the muddy parts. My horse was pulling like a steam train and had his ears forward and would have easily run round again had I let him! He clearly enjoyed it and there wasn’t a problem, he galloped through the finish and he pulled up sound, and had I thought he was not fit enough would not have run him.
Why do people have to feel the need to comment on everything? Why not just be pleased for us instead of being nasty about it? I never asked for their comment, in fact I found it quite upsetting. It just proves what they think about me, I am really disappointed that they should be like this and can’t understand why.
Thank you to the organiser, staff, helpers, volunteers and everyone else involved with the day. Had a lovely time. Just a shame it was marred by one persons comments.
