Just got my first foalie and I'm reg her with Sports Horse GB and Scottish SH. I'm quite comfortable with in hand showing but what I've never done is get a foal graded. I would like to do it as I think she has got great bloodlines.

What would it involve and do they just do it all loose?

Hi there,

Firstly welcome to HHO...the breeding section is a very good source of information with lots of different breeders.

If you are grading your foal with the SSH you are too late for this year. The next gradings wont take place until Aug/Sep 2008.

I cannot speak for the SHBGB but for the SSH you show your foal in-hand in front of the judges and in walk. The foals are then let loose for the judges to assess the trot and canter. Foals are judged on conformation and movement and given individual marks for both. The average mark between the two areas is then taken and this gives you the mark for the Premium awarded.

That was the format this year anyway..
