i put our two colts in our big field while i was on hols.they were there 2 weeks(i have moved them back now).they have developed very scabby noses that i have now found out is due to there being st johns wort present in the field.i hope i have caught it in time.i understand that they should be out of sunlight but i cannot put them in because i have ran out of bedding but will be getting some in the week.they are ok in themselves and in a shady part of the field.
does anybody know....
are there lasting results?
how and when do i get rid of this plant?
why didn`t the horses that were there last winter have any problems?(they had eaten the field quite bare by the spring)
should i apply anything to the scabs?

any help and advice please.
thanks

Don't know re: permenant damage etc...

but do know that St. John's Wort loses 80% of its toxicity when dried, which is probably why the horses which grazed it over winter shown no visible signs of poisoning.

i have a plant in a garden border that i always thought was it and the yellow flowers are nearly 2ins wide, this in the field is much smaller and it didn`t occur to me what it was.
the field was unmanaged before we got it and i need to improve it.

I work on the principle that if its yellow yank it out!!!!!! I foun a couple of plants in my patch last year, but they haven't come up this year (glad I pull it, even though at the time I didn't have a clue it was St. John's Wort). Hope your boys are O.K. and there is no lasting damage.

Cahill - don't know about the st johns wort but if it makes them photo sensitive what about putting very high factor sunblock on thier noses or any other light coloured bits - would use the baby stuff as less likely to make thier noses more sensitive -but not sure if you should use it if the scabs are weeping.

the scabs look very dry at the moment with some cracks in and it is not sunny.they look like they may drop off in a few days.
have seen some much worse pics just now so i think i have got to it in time.

Sudocreme is very good and quite cheap, stays on and will give protection on a sunny day
It wouldnt hurt and could help to give something like Global herbs Restore to counteract any damage to liver
