I'm looking in to buying myself a trailer, and am just wondering if any of you use stabilisers to help prevent snaking?

What are the pro's and con's?

I just remember that when my dad towed a caravan he never towed without one.

I used to have one on my previous vehicle but unfortunately it won't fit on the landy.

They do make a difference. Snaking shouldn't be too much of an issue if you've got the weights right etc but stabilisers do help with those times when lorries pass too close, etc etc.

I tow an IW 510 with a shogun and have never used stabilisers. If you are towing with the correct vehicle and at the correct speed, why would you need them? None of my friends use them either. Trailers wth horses in are heavier than caravans and the centre of gravity is low, so I don't think they are necessary.

Snaking generally occurs from going too fast. As others have said it's less of an issue with a trailer than a caravan, but do still watch your speed. I used to tow with an estate car and as soon as I got much over 50mph (not fully concentrating and wanting to get home) you could feel everything get a little unstable, so it reminded me to slow down.
As long as you watch your speed and don't dsrive erraticaly, there's no need for stabilisers.
Enjoy your new freedom! I couldn't live without having transport now.

Yes I use one. I have a LWB Shogun and and Bateson so completely within weights. It gives a much more stable tow. The trailer never moves an inch. I can really feel the difference without on. I wouldn't dream of towing out of a 30mph speed limit without one. The difference in the feel of towing is very noticeable. For £100 I just don't understand why people wouldn't use one..... Truely don't get it.....

And snaking can happen within proper weights and speed limits I'm afraid. Why take the chance? why?
