Who uses stables bandages?
Do you use them at night?
During the day?
Only in the Winter for warmth?

I know a lot of show jumpers use stables bandages and Winston wears them every night too for support, stopping his legs from filling and of course warmth as he has all the fur clipped off his legs also.

Just interested to know who else bandages or who doesnt and for what reasons you choose to or not.

Would do a proper poll but they confused me and i end up getting it all wrong, so just humour me please.

Thanks

I used to use them. Usually after a hard day.

However, I tried to use them on Viento and he took 3 out of 4 off!

Our oldie on the yard wears them for support, a few of the truly full clipped ones wear thermatex wraps for warmth

I used stable equichaps on Simon in the winter as he had clipped legs. I used them at night for warmth they were great!! i have used bandages in the past but found they just slipped in the night and you have to make sure that they are evenly wrapped around the legs. Equichaps are so much easier and quicker!!!!

I use them every night, same reasons as you......

only over eskadron climatex though - not gamgee and only on the nights that she has been ridden that day.
If not ridden in day then at night in winter she wears Thermatex leg wraps and in summer nothing!

PMSL V is so like Snoop, he cant be left with boots let alone bandages for 5 minutes as he starts taking them off.
His brand new NEW boots are now half eaten after he went out in the field with them ARGHHH

I tend to use stable wraps as opposed to bandages mostly but I will bandage if there is a problem and when the wraps are in the washing machine.

If he's being bandaged, then they're on at night only as mine is out during the day.

I use leg wraps throughout the year pretty much also... as thats what my trainers have always done and you just tend to follow suit I suppose!

I switched predominantly to leg wraps as a) theyre faster and b) as my horse is on full livery, Im always very sceptical about other people bandaging his legs because so many people do it incorrectly.

If my horse had a specific problem in his limbs though, Id switch to bandaging in an instant. Have always used them and im sure I always will! Just as i prefer to bandage for schooling rather than use boots

I did bandage when I first cae to college because the girls' hind leg's filled, I stopped for some reason but I'm going to start bandaging Missy again starting tonight because she looks like she's got elephantitis on her scarred leg

never bandage any more. I believe eventers should be tough enough to go without - i also turn out without boots with friends. They shouldn't need the protection in their stables. I also think that if you are supporting their legs in stables then how can expect them to cope in competition. Feel the only way to ensure toughness is too let them be as natural as possible!

The only reason i would bandage was for an injury, for example mud fever.

Don't use then, far too much trouble. Also could cause problems if badly applied. Only time I use them is after hunting. I check them then remove before going to bed..

having said that I never over trim legs. I use a blade guard and do a no 4 or no 6 equivalent.

Yeah I only used to use bandages If I had been hunting, or done a XC on Hard Ground etc.
If your horses legs get big when left in a stable over night, then its a good idea to keep them on at night.

However Elizabeth sent me a picture of Wolfe tonight in PINK Leg Warmers to keep his legs warm

Sounds about right. I put his bandages on before i rode, then chucked him in the stable whilst i quickly went for a wee and came back to find them all churned up n th straw and V looking very very sheepish!!!!!!!!!

Good point vic and this is how i used to look at bandaging.....only when necessary i.e injury.
In the winter before I would always use thermatex wraps which were great when i had washed off winstons legs and left him to stand in over night.

Now, see with winston, say he goes hunting all day. That night his legs will swell (fine) but they end up cracking due to wet, cold conditions and then i end up with a horse with cracked sore legs.
If i keep them bandaged his legs dont swell which means they dont crack which means i dont end up with a horse with super sore legs.
Now none of my others have bandages or wraps on at night just him....probably because hes a big wimp, and hence hes gone from being a tough eventer to a poofy dressage horse lol

Equally, since being diagnosed with ringbone i find bandaging has helped considerably.

Mind you snoop wont be getting the same treatment..... cos hes hard lol

But interesting to note that many competition horses are bandages as a matter of course.

Ted wears bandages every night on his hind legs cause he gets lymphangitis and I could do without a vets bill and also..l bit warmer for the thewee tb see. being a thin skinned whimp as he is.

my dressage horse wore bandages 24/7 except for turn out cos she was an old arthritic cripple. But i actually wonder whether it was necessary as when she had a bigger box and more turn out her legs were much better. My 14 yo eventer (who your boy reminds me so much off - its the arrogance of how great I am!) throws a swollen reaction if I bandage him.

At the end of the day you have to do what you have to do! if your boy benefits from it why should you stop!

When I start wrapping my horses in cotton wool I always think that Mark Todd was happy to turn out without boots!

I always used to stable bandage as my mare gets really swollen legs have since discovered veredus magnetic boots however and now use these instead! If she stays in all day however i do take them off and leave her legs to breath, dont boot up in the field other than over reach boots ( she went through a stage of constantly ripping shoes off!)

Every night on all fours, support warmth, protection and stop filling, also use stable boots by fal with the silver interactive which are are also great. I use them at night or after events with poultice under after brown paper. woudl not be without them and if done right then great but can be dangerous.

Nope - never ever ever! I am old school, too much support leads to the legs not being strong enough to support themselves - it is VERY rarely that cold here to warrant wrapping a horses legs IMHO, plus I have always had large stables so the horse moves around - in fact, thinking about it, even with small stables I have never had a prob with horses legs filling LOL

Me too. Too lazy to bandage otherwise.
I'd bandage a horse that got filled legs in the stable though but luckily I don't have one of those at the moment (fingers crossed)

If my older horse has to stay in for some reason then I have to bandage him to stop his legs filling and to protect his legs if he gets cast. I tried thermatex leg wraps but he looked like an elephant in the morning.

Interestingly my other horse's legs fill if I use stable bandages or leg wraps so he goes without.

I've never heard of stable bandages being used for support before, I just apply them fairly loosely to keep the legs warm and hence improve circulation.

No I dont bandage. I have left the fur on madams legs so it keeps them warm, well apart from those whispy bits I trimmed those off! Also she isnt exactly in hard work lol, but should I mean when I start competing I will get her some of those Thermatex wraps for over night.

I would probably hose the legs off then dry then wrap up.

Bless her popped her HW rug on last night with her neck - left her snug as a bug

I used to bandage P at night for support to stop his legs filling, especially coming into the winter when his turnout is reduced, I recently stopped bandaging every night as he seem to be getting used to the situation. However I do bandage after jumping, the full works - bandages, brown paper and clay - I also do it if he has been travelling for a long period of time.

Hey BB's

I only have used them as a medicinal help - if that makes sence.

I'd put them on Ludo after a days hunting with Ice Tight etc.

On Bonnie, when she was in all the time while investigating her lameness she had them on her front legs.

I would never as a matter of course bandage legs as I do not think there are any long term benefits. As someone here said, if they need support doing nothing, then how can they be expected to support themselves SJ or XC?

Same as humans - mother is a nurse and when ever I'd sprained an ankle, the bandage was not allowed on over night - only in the day when joint was being used.

regards
Maeve.

Both mine wear the thermatex leg wraps at night, i cant be bothered with bandaging and they do a very good job and are easy to wash!

Blossy wears them because her legs fill up alot when shes standing in, and also in the cold weather shes got slight arthritis in her hocks so they help to keep her legs warm. If shes in during the day aswel she has them taken off, as her legs dont really fill up in the day time.

Archie wears them to protect his legs. His legs dont fill up at all, but hes a mega clutz and bashes into his waterbucket and feed bowl (even tho they are both flexi rubber) and he also lies down a lot so it protects his legs when he gets up. He wears them at night. If he is in during the day i take them off whilst im mucking him out, then his hind ones go back on and he wears magnetic strips on the front legs during the day.

They will both carryon wearing them in the summer until it gets too hot.
