currently popping stable bandages on my horse at night, shes lived out at night for over a year now and only spent one winter 'in' her legs get pretty filled over night but go down once she goes out during the day.
query one:
hard to explain this one so bare with!! - i do alot of work strengthening her legs and dont ride her in boots or bandages - she only wears proper xc boots for cross country but apart from that i dont use anything and she has good strong legs. will having the stable bandages on over night mess with this? i.e will it weaken them because they are being supported for half the day whereas before they were 'left to their own devises' should i be more careful doing work on the roads/hacking that wasnt previously an issue?
query two:
just spent a small fortune on a set of stable pads that i am having to wash every few days because they get a bit mank - shes prone to mud fever so dont like to keep her in dirty bandages, but with just one set - its a bit of a logistical nightmare ensuring they are clean and at the yard. so was thinking of making a couple more sets - cannot justify buying another set or two! . . but! . . back to the mud fever - i'v started a new routine this year which seems to be working well for us at the moment - washing her clipped legs 2-3 times a week alternating between hibi scrub and tee tree shampoo - towel drying leaving to dry for a while and then dousing in talcum powder then bandaging - not even a whiff of a scab yet! which is un heard of for this horse! but i was wondering if i lined my home made pads with the bobbly/fleecy sheep skin stuff would this wick any left over moisture from the legs? am paranoid about bandaging wet legs) or would this just trap the moisture and heat the legs up? what would be the best material for making the pads out of? i was thinking maybe fleece? current ones are lovely soft suede type material but cannot find any of it at a reasonable price so thinking alternatives!
