I have one on straw and one on Bed-down excel which is a straw and shavings mix. Both are very clean, the straw bed is mucked out every day and the shavings/straw mix is a deep bed and skipped out every day with the wet taken out once a week. Bed-down bed started eith 8 bales and use one a week, straw bed needs about one bale a week as well, a couple of sections being added every couple of days.

We have rubber matting and shavings.
However, Jack is a very clean horse and only uses one area of the stable as his toilet, because of this I find shavings a lot easier to muck out compared to straw and it takes half the time.

I must be the only one that doesn't like Bedmax at all then, I hated it!

Interested to hear that Sundown Yellow is back in production, that's lovely stuff to use but I'll be going back to wood pellets again for next winter; so easy, quick and clean.

shavings seemed a good idea to me. i was wanted something to soak up the wee a bit better....it deffo did that...a litle bit too much though. LOL and at 11 pound a bale of shavings....( not very big bale either) I thought ..this isnt worth it. if it worked how i wanted it too, i wouldnt mind the cost.

chorley bio wood pellets...is that like wood chippings? I dont like the idea of that , she loves to roll and lay down so it needs to be soft. somebody said cos i have rubber matting down she would be okay on that alone...but i dont like the idea nor would i put her down on just rubber matting

OMG 4.50 a bale! Have I got that right? I'm not surprised you only use one a week! £2 is the most I have ever paid, but usually around£1.60.
I use Hemcore - marvelous stuff. I will NEVER go back to straw after using this - it is so clean and easy, just like the wood pellets.
Just read the post saying Hemcore gone out of business. Nightmare! I will try to stock up with any I can. I'm addicted to the lovely lemony smell!

I use shavings and rubber matting.

If you are looking to reduce work, the rubber matting is worth it. I only use 2 bales of shavings a month now rather than 2 a week. You also need a much smaller bed with the mats which means much quicker mucking out.

Also shavings are only £5.50 a bale here from the local agricultural merchant. I think you need to shop around.

Another vote for wood pellets.....I have used straw and shavings for my very dirty girl and wouldnt change now I have discovered the wood pellets.

Straw is cheap but takes an age to muck out, shavings are more expensive but the droppings always got mixed in so I used to spend ages sifting them out...even when deep littered.

Wood pellets are fab, soft bed, increadibly cheap because once the bed is established it only needs an occasional top up (not put a bag in for about a month now). The poo sits on the top so just needs lifting off and the pellets dry it out so it doesnt paddle in. No smell, mucking out in a fraction of the time and cheaper than anything else I have ever used.....win win.

I pay £2.50 per bale of straw, that's off the yard and apparently some of that goes towards maintenance of the muckheap. You're definitely being overcharged for straw at £4.50!

Should be working.....

There are a few places - Corley Bio woods (near Coventry) or Liverpool Wood Pellets and there are some other places to - they all deliver nationwide. If you do a search in here and especially Stable Yard you should get all the info you need as there have been loads of posts about them.
