Hi all ,
I’m going to a week long stay away show and I’m going to bandage my horse’s legs at night for support and stop swelling . Would you say stable boots such as the PE magnetic ones do as good as a job as bandages ? Will save me a a lot of time if I can just use the stable wraps

I don’t think boots are as good for preventing swelling. They do help, but not as much as a well done bandage. I’m not sure I see any point in bandaging at night though if the horse is in 24/7. I think if their legs are going to swell, they’d do it during the day too. The other thing to consider is heat. it’s not cold yet so any covering is likely to keep the tendons warmer than they should be.

I think bandages do a better job for puffy legs but they do hold the heat in, I would maybe just give your horse a quick walk or lunge in the morning they normally go down after about 10 minutes I find.

I use the PE wraps ordinary and magnetic on my oldie when stabled in winter and he originally used them post-op (annular ligament) after an initial period of bandaging. I find they work well. I do agree with others however that they are really warm and I never use in the summer or when it is very warm.

If I'm staying away and my horse is stabled I try to get him out of his stable for a walk or in-hand grazing a few times a day. My concern is always colic more than leg swelling due to the sudden change of routine and diet caused by lack of turnout and grazing. If I had to choose between wraps and bandages to prevent swelling I'd bandage.
