Now horse is on months of box rest :( we're noticing that although we muck out daily, his rubber matts seem to be getting pretty smelly. We plan to power wash the mats once a week, but wonder what the best (and cheapest since we'll be using a lot of it over the next while!) liquid cleaner is? Mum suggested domestos but thats pretty chemical smelling. Any ideas?

we just use bog standard disinfectant. as long as you rinse well and give it sufficient time to dry out and air then its not really smelly.

I wash off mats with diluted Jeyes & then hose off, then when floor is dry I sprinkle Jeyes powder on the floor & then replace mats.

Have just done this as Big Fuzzy has been on box rest for a bit of a the last 6 weeks. While she was in, I took the bed back to the mats & after lifting the wet, sprayed with an old plant mister a mix of Jeyes in water - left to dry for half hour & replaced the bedding on top again.

Her box was still smelling fine when I cleaned it out and those mats had not been cleaned under, since she went in at the beginning of winter.

Hope you have a nice time scrubbing :D

i highly recommend Safe4 disinfectants and odour eliminator. http://www.safe4disinfectant.com/

I bought one of these pressure sprayers from Wilko - click here - and leave it filled up with diluted Safe4

Then after i muck out i just pump the sprayer up, have a quick wizz around the stable and bobs your uncle.

Safe4 isnt the cheapest to buy but it goes a LONG was as you dilute it down loads and it works really really well.

Get some Biosuper. It is a dry powder but it is great at getting rid of ammonia and absorbs the liquid too. Just clean under mats and then put it under before you put mats back - voila!!
