I have recently switched my boy from shavings to woodchip bedding and am loving it :) Massive savings in money and time, plus he is never down to the floor in the morning, seems to lie down more, and his feet are great.

My only concern is that I used to leave the floor bare for the day a couple of times a week to let it dry out and now can't do that (the woodchip is sem-deep litter). As a result the floor is getting a bit smelly when I dig down to it to get out a wet patch (there is no smell when the bed is down). I have considered getting a disinfectant powder of some kind to put down once I've dug a wet patch out and then put the bedding on top. Does this sound like a good idea, does anyone have any experience with these? If so, can you recommend one?

I'm using Jeyes Powder, the lemon is rather lemon-y but the original is rather like the fluid. Possibly not as good as those that absorb smells, but mine on straw that is a wet monkey and has to have some wet taken out to the floor daily, has a sprinkle of it on the floor. It does help and is less outlay than the proper horse ones.

Stalosan F is good, biodri is also good but a bit coarser

Both will disinfect, freshen and dry out wet patches

Thanks for the replies. It sounds like this is a good idea and there are plenty of options around that do the job. I think I might try out StableZone initially (mostly because Hyperdrug do it so free delivery).

I use ' bio dry ' it's the best one I've found, very reasonably priced, absorbs wet, disinfects and gets rid of the stench of piddle! I get mine off eBay, about £20 for huge tub which lasts me most of the winter (only need a sprinkle every few days). Think it's mainly used by poultry farmers but it is safe for horses and all livestock.

Bio-super or equi-safe. Fantastic stuff. It is a fine powder so is easy to apply in a thin layer and is super absorbent and binds up the ammonia smell.
