Stable issues

Hi

Ive got a 17 year old fell mare, and she is terrible with other horses, if another comes near her she puts her ears back and squeals and sometimes with strike out with her front foot and kick at back.

Even in the stable she will kick the stable walls back and sides if there is another horse in the next stable, im at a livery yard with american style barn stables so she can hear the other horse.

What the heck can i do without stabling her on her own which is impossible on a livery yard to stop this behaviour she has caught me on the knee before striking out at other horses.

Ive tried oestress as i thought maybe a hormone issue?

She may simply be a mare who does better in a traditional outside stable where she is not invaded within her personal space. I find it a nuisance having stables where horses are kept so close together. Our barn is similar and horses are often nipping and squabbling with each other when they're stabled. It's ridiculous on a large yard with lots of horses coming and going. It drives my mare nuts (depending on the neighbour). Luckily, we're at the end so only have a neighbour on one side.

Mine is stabled the same, they all bite and annoy each other. The horse next to me is a pain he can be very aggressive and has rip my rug before now , are you able to put a rubber mat up on the wall? So she can kick out at that and save her legs a bit. Is it possible to swap stables with someone so shes on the end? It sounds like she likes her own space and probaly seems to her the horse next door might intrude into "her" space

Our stables are separated with grills in a small section of the side of the stable, and are grilled at the top half of the walls all the way round. Sometimes the odd horses doesn't get on well with its stable mate, but usually putting a piece of plywood up does the trip and they don't bother each other any more.

I personally hated it when the horse next to mine (who was aggresive) had plywood up as my horse is on the end of a row and it meant he had not contact with the horse next door to him, and I felt really sorry for him. His present stable friend gets on really well with Bailey, and they often stand side by side in the stable heads by the gap 'talking'.

Would still suggest D&H moody mare, does work and maybe mollichaff calmer, you cant always change the way your horse is stabled but finding peace is bliss.
