I need to buy some stable mats. Has anyone used gym mats (the interlinking type). I haven’t a huge budget do looking out for some second hand and wondered if they may be a cheaper option?

I'm pretty sure they will be cheaper in the short term but I doubt they will last a season, so will work put more expensive I the long run. Stable mats are very thick, to stand up to the weight of a horse walking over them often while wearing metal shoes.

They won’t last more than a few days! Someone at my yard had some at home in the spare room, she brought them to try and one roll and the mat was shredded by the horses shoe 😂

I wouldn’t bother x

I cut up those to use as pads for hoof boots when I ride our stoney lane. They last one hack, 30 mins of walk for a barefoot cob.

If budget is the issue I'd buy 2 proper mats for the front of the stable to stop the horse standing on concrete then bed up the back.

I do this - mine are rubber at the front and bed at the back - as long as the bed is deep enough I find they back bit is fine anyway and tbh the wee just soaks into them and they end up smelling. I just don’t like them standing on concrete at the front because it’s slippy on the concrete and also not great for the joints.
