Stable Matting

Depends if you are going to put any bedding on top (which I would - I use shavings on mine). If you are not using bedding, then go for the squashier mats. Otherwise, anything goes (most have a 10 yr guarantee on them). Only thing I would say is that if you are on your own, you will be able to manage the lighter weight ones easily by yourself to clean underneath. I've got heavy rubber ones and they are a 2/3 person job to shift. However, they are a good job if you can cope with the labour of moving them.

I have the lighter weight ones that you lift and to be honest lifting them every other day is bloomin hard work ( I have a very wet horse). He unfortunately has a tendon injury so have now borrowed some of the heavier ones of my friend and they are fantastic because they are sealable!! They are from a company called Quattro.org.uk and you can take them up if you move yards and then simply buy the sealant and lay them down again and seal them (£6 a tube, needed 6 tubes for a 12 x 14 stable). They have changed my life (!) for the first time in 4 years I no longer have to lift mats every other day - would highly recommend!

i got mine from a company called woody pets, they have a 10yr guarantee, they are very good quality, they are not light but they were convenient at the time when i got them, they delivered and fitted them all for £250
one day i may buy some really nice light weight ones but they are good for now

I use heavy solid ones. They fit well but are not sealed, I have well drained slightly sloping floors and I can't remember ever lifting them. I use aquamax/woody pet bedding which absorbs most of the wet.

Got Kraiburg Kenmats which were pricey but worth the money, lots more choice available now. Stick to solid rubber at least 15mm thick, the most important thing is that the floor underneath is gently sloping for drainage.

I don't understand why so many feel the need to lift them alltogether, is it because the equimat types come in a stiff rectangle? Solid rubber mats can be gently folded in half to allow hosing underneath or if you're in a hurry, stick the hose underneath and let it run for 10 min's.

Have had my mats on several yards and never found this a chore so long as concrete floor was free draining

I got mine from a company called 'Midland Matting' on Ebay. Standard 6x4 and 17mm thick. Really good quality and very cheap at approx £22.50 per mat plus postage which was approx £45. I had the lighter / thinner mats before these and they were RUBBISH!

I use Tylene mats and they're great. They are the sealed ones so no hassle to keep clean. The also supplied us with rubber for our walkway and washdown areas in our barn and these have worked really well and haven't been slippy. We first used Tylene about 5 years ago and when we added the barn last year we lifted and reused some of the mats and they have been fine too. Another potential hazard with the unsealed ones is that we have two two year old colts who like to lift theirs up and move them!
