Stable Mirrors

Just thought I'd write and let you know that I have just bought a mirror for my horse.

He was very messy in his stable, got stressed when the other horse next door went out and box walked. (he is turned out during the day).

I now have the mirror in place and my horse instantly went from stressed to standing completely still and staring at himself in the mirror.

I am amazed! It will be interesting to see what his box is like in the morning.

Has anyone else had good experiences with mirrors?
 
Am waiting for a small one to arrive for my lorry ATM.

Have been considering one for Finnbo's stable as he's started weaving recently and after reading your post I think I will def get him one

Yes I've had fab results from my mirror - H has had it for a few years now and whereever we've moved the mirror has moved too- It only made me realise how much the mirror affected her when I didn't immediately put the mirror up on our last move - H didn't settle as well as she usually does - but when I put the mirror up - bingo - she calmed down over night - it was as though her "friend" had moved with her and she wasn't as worried!

I am very impressed. Must clean it as he spent the first few minutes breathing on it and running his breakfast all over it!

Do they ever realise that it is them??? He saw me in the mirror whilst mucking out, does he think he has two identical mums?!!
 
Wow, wonder if this will help my oldie who hates being on his own....am doing the gradual seperation thing at the moment with him from my youngster, but if this helps then i will get him one too!
 
Roger has one and he stands in it for hours ! very funny...

think I might have to get Miles one too.. see if it makes him take a bit more pride in his and his stables' appearance!!
 
LOL! I don't know but as soon as it went up H nuzzled up to it and really looked content as if it were her special "friend" - Heaven knows what she thinks it is!! hehe! (I'm not bothered as long as it makes her feel more content!)

Sorry to hijack your post.

Which mirrors do you use and where from? Im completely broke at the moment so I cant spend a forune but I also dont want a rubbish one!

My 3 all came off e-bay (1 x 3ft X 4ft Steel (2nd hand) and 1x 2ftX4ft Acrylic & 1x 2ftX2ft Acrylic travel mirror for the lorry!!!). Opps must stop shopping!!!! Not sure if it is still the case, but I got my Acrylic ones from the Garden section as were identical, but cheaper than the ones in the Equestrian section.
 
Nope put up within a cm of the instructions. I think it means they are a pair of absolute cowbags - both boss the others around the field.
I dont think the feed thing makes much of a difference. I have a gelding who drags his haylage and feed over and eats it in front of the mirror.

Didnt work for a horse at the yard - in the end he a sheep for company instead
 
I bought a mirror for my old horse when he had to have a lengthy stay on box rest. From the minute he spotted himself, he was in love! He'd even nicker his new friend when he went into the stable. Bless him, he wasn't the brightest horse on the planet!

I don't have him anymore but my current horse is in the same stable. Maybe it's a mare thing, but she's not daft. She knows that it's a mirror and she is only ever seen to be standing looking into it when I'm out on the yard. She uses it to get a view of me from the yard that is blocked by the doorway, as I have internal stables. Clever girl!
 
I am waiting for mine to come...ordered it last thurs so should arrive this week. I'm so glad someone has had such a positive experience, really hoping it works for my mare. Alisha sounds very much like your horse, in that when horse next door goes out she starts box walking and standing at the door throwing head up and down. Can't have her in on her own as she gets to stressed so whenever she is in have to have Jigsaw in too so she has company. Really hoping the mirror solves these problems!

I bought one for my TB mare a couple of months ago and she loves it too. She often finishes her feed and then stands with her nose up aganist it for ages. Occasionally she narks at it as well and tries to bite it, that is v funny to watch. She is def more settled in her stable since we got it.
