Do they work? I have a horse that weaves and has to come in for the winter (would be ideal to winter her out but pure bred Arab, needs a full clip due to level of work she's in and she drops weight like a super model on the lead up to Milan fashion week!) she weaves when she's stressed which is when she's away from her herd. Was wondering if a stable mirror would be worth a try? She looks on to other horses but a soon as the stable door gets closed she starts weaving like a mad woman :s not good for the front legs or keeping weight on!

When I put my gelding out on loan my section a was on her own. She was totally cool about it but it wasn't very nice for her. So I bought a stable mirror and put it up in her shelter. Now she practically lives in her shelter, she loves staring at herself :p So for her it has really worked (she even talks to herself!) but i guess every horse is different. You can get them pretty cheap from ebay so you could always try it out and if it doesn't work you won't have spent too much money on it.

My pony was a chronic weaver, to the point that it wasnt fair to stable her. I bought her a mirror and hey presto.

Best money ever spent!!

I know some dont like them and out of 4 on the yard that have them, 1 wouldnt go in the stable with it at all and the other beat the hell out of it for the first day and now loves it!

Mine was a weaver too, but she's shown no signs of it in 3 years since she's had a stable mirror. Well worth a try.

Hi. I bought a stable mirror for my mare, she hated it and started attacking it. She was putting her ears back and running at the mirror and then turning round and trying to kick it! I have obviously removed it - shame you don't live nearer you could have had it.

I brought one several years ago from ebay for my mare when I had to put her on box rest for a while. Worked a treat while she was on box rest - she was much happier.

I have now got 2 youngsters - 3yo TB and 4yo arab - and they both love the mirror. I know the instructions usually tell you not to put the mirror near to their food, but they have all in turn eaten right alongside the mirror, with no problems. My arab particularly likes admiring himself while he is eating! If anything, I think that the mirror has stopped a lot of scrapping over food in the field TBH.

I was just thinking about getting another mirror yesterday - so thanks for reminding me again!! :)

Does anyone know if these mirrors would help for a box walker? Really struggling with her already in the stable before winter even sets in!

I had to keep mine on his own for a while; and put one up. Not that he's stressy on his own coz he's equally happy to be with others, or on his own, but I have found that he really seems to want to be in the stable and it seems to be his comfort zone. I've got another stable next door to this stable where there isn't a mirror, and have put him in there occassionally, but he really doesn't seem to like being in there as much as the stable with the mirror in. Hope this helps.

Yes it would. Jamin did everything but stand still in a stable. At the vetting, vet told us we were making a mistake buying her because she was that bad! Stable mirror worked for her. We have actually just moved stables after 5 years in old one and I havent put her mirror back up yet and she is more than happy without it.

Thank you for your reply. I will have to pick one up at the horse shop next time I'm there. Hope it will work for her and she will like it rather than not as she has a bit of a thing against other horses!

Thank you everybody for the super positive replies, I hadn't even thought to look on ebay so will hunt around and get her a standard sized one. Hopefully she won't attack it, she is a touch marish but she generally has a soft spot for fellow gingers :)

Will update this thread once I have the mirror installed! :)

I have found stable mirrors to be great for horses that don't like to be in the stable on their own, as I have my horses at home they do sometimes need to stay in alone when the others are worked and mirrors reduced or stopped the calling to the others and the stressy box walking.

I also had one horse who wouldn't load in the lorry alone and if we did manage to get him in would kick hell out of it, I put a stable mirror in there and he practically ran in and stood like a lamb staring at himself the whole journey! It was a real turning point for him made him much happier to go out and more settled at shows. Also got mine from ebay 1200 x 1800 I think.
