I'm thinking of getting a Stable mirror for my horse as he is unfortunately being kept on his own this Winter. I've never bought one before so was wondering.......

Do most horses find them comforting or do some not like them at all?

What is the best size to get? And the best place to buy (I've seen some on ebay that seem a reasonable price)?

Also where is the best place to put them? I was thinking of putting mine near the beasties hay in the hope he may eat more of it (he's not a big hay eater  ) would this work?

Anything else I need to do/know?

Thanks in advance.

I have used one in the past with a little mare on box rest - 100% result, she went from climbing the walls to spending all day talking to her "friend".
Better to pay extra for the stainless steel mounted on hardboard. I saw a friend's horse totally object to the intruder in her box, and kicked her mirror to pieces - that was a flexi, shiny plastic type, and it lasted about four minutes!
You need to mount it at shoulder/low neck height as opposed to head height. I think this is because when your horse sees the "new horse" it therefore has it's head down and is more submissive. Despite the reaction by my friend's horse, I have seen many more good results than bad. Good luck!

Great, thanks guys, it sounds like one might do the trick with my lad. Will have a look on ebay and order one tonight :)

I bought mine from www.amigostablemirrors.co.uk very good, came with instructions and screws to fix it to the wall. Unfortunately the horse I bought it for hates it, she was running at it with her ears back then spinning round and trying to lick it! If you live near me you are welcome to have it.
