Stable Mirrors

Yep, they really work. My boy was a total stress head, nearly coming out over the top of the stable door, shaking, working himself up into a lather. Tried everything and as a last resort put in a stable mirror. The result was amazing, he took one look at his 'new friend' and the stressing stopped in front of my eyes. He is as quiet as a lamb in the stable now, I can even leave the door open and he will happily stand in his stable and not even attempt to come out.

I know this might seem like a dumb ,( but related question ) just say your horse is one of a pair and the field buddy is grey , if you take said buddy away but put up a mirror wouldn't your horse think , hang on a minute who's this big chestnut oaf - never seen him before, and be more stressy?

TBH, depends upon the horse and it's temperament. Some enjoy them. Some ignore them. Some attack them. One mare I had (who was 'Boss' mare of her herd) hated hers. In the morning after the first night she'd spent with the mirror installed, we found it with kick cracks in it AND teeth marks scraped all across it. Thank goodness it was Perspex. Every time the mare caught her refection in it, she'd flatten her ears and lunge at it. She never did accept it and we removed it. My other horses appear indifferent to theirs.

I got given a new one when I bought my new mare and she didn't have one in her old owners stable. I find her asleep infront of it a lot of the time and its next to her haybar. She never gets very stressed in her stable though so guess they work!
