Has anyone here used them? If so how did your horse get on with it and did it solve a problem? I'm also wondering where you put it in the stable. Thanks.
Hi.... Merlin has one.... at the back away from food and water so he wont feel threatened....
Put it in as current yard trend!!! Cant be leaving him out can I??
He also used to stand by the mirrors in the school if he was turned out.... he also looks at himself when schooling... so thought he might like a handsome friend in bed with him!!!
He poos infront of it though (its head height) so obviously doesnt stand staring at it all night!!!
Does it matter if they lose interest if it helps them to settle I wonder? My new horse is getting a bit stressy in his stable, he was pretty good when he arrived and I know at his previous home. This may be because he had a better view of his neighbour, as they were in stables in a barn, with just half-height walls between.
I want to do something to help him before he gets himself too worried and maybe develops any stereotypical behaviour, so thought this might be worth trying. They are very reasonable on EBay.
I've read the research about them helping with weaving, and that makes me think it could be well worth giving a go.
He doesn't seem to "do" toys, so I thought maybe he'd enjoy admiring himself!
Seriously, he was very upset this afternoon when there were hailstones coming down, and kept rushing to the door and jumping about. The other horses weren't bothered so didn't look out, and I'm thinking that maybe he needs a bit of reassuring company.
I know that it's amost impossible to cure something like weaving once they start, so I'll try almost anything to settle him as quickly as possible.
If he stays out then he'd be on his own. And I do think it makes life easier if they are in the habit of being stabled. It is a shame, because he doesn't have a history of being stressed.
Buy one ... highly recommended. My daughters horse suffered separation anxiety big time and had to be stabled alone when his field/stablemate went off to liphook for a week. We were dreading it and seriously thought of sleeping in the stable with him . We put the mirror up and the difference was incredible. He went from sweated up stressed out box-walker to laid back relaxed horse in minutes . He still talks to "magic horse" now when he comes in at night . He doesn't seem to have lost interest yet .
Im quite open to new things and tried a mirror to help with vices,... lets just say it depends on the horse!!!
Johara is quite territorial and greedy! so when Im standing near her shes constantly has a go at the 'evil mare' that keeps copying her!!
But shes fine when no ones about!
The yard manager was doing up Jo's rug and she cracked the mirror, (acrylic), so if they tend to have a nip at the "evil horse" that looks at them, then make sure its on a backing board!
Polly on the other hand,..doesnt really pay much attention!
He's a very amiable horse with others, but yes I think the backing board would be a must, just in case. They say not to put it near feed or haynets in case they think the other horse is after their grub. I'm definitely going to go for this, so thanks everyone for helping to make up my mind.
Got a bit of a shock the first day I was asked to go feed Gus. "Oh just chuck some hay over the door" - there was me thinking it was going to be a new livery or something. Nope was a sheep
I bought 3 on ebay yesterday ,they arrived today and it was the same postage for one as three. Putting them up tomorrow .two in stables and one I am going to cut to fit my partitions in the horsebox by their heads ,as one horse is weaving badly when he travels alone[ never at any other time] One of our horses is on box rest so I hope it helps him
I got mine from the stable mirror company , just type stable mirrors into the search engine and you'll find them . They also sell on ebay. Very fast service and very helpful .
