Just wondered what the feedback is for using mirrors. Have a horse who is generally happy in his stable until the morning when others start to go out before him, then he gets quite stressy. Consequently am looking into mirrors, but am not sure how big, where to buy from and whether people have had success with them.

Many thanks :0)

You never know in advance. Bought one for a horse that fussed when brought in on his own and it worked wonderfully. He'd stand next to it quite relaxed - he also put his ears back at it at feed time! Our other 3 have used the stable at various times and totally disregard mirror whether they are fussing or not.
The one I bought came from firm called 'stable mirrors' I think. It's lasted fine for 5 years so far.

Mine loves her mirror but it would make absolutely no difference if others go out before her in the morning, she would be furious that she's not first. I get up early and put her out, it saves me a fortune on bedding as she will turn it into a cesspit.

I take it your on a diy yard???

we have stable mirrors in all our stables, could you not leave a small haynet for the morning and ask someone nicely if they could give it to him so he at least has something to eat, or ask someone to turn him out and you do something in return for them??

I got one for my gelding when I first bought him and he was quite stressy, he took to it straight away. I put it next to his haybar as he's quite nosey so would lunge from the haybar in the corner to his stable door, the mirror seemed to relax him in this situation too.

So general consensus is.....it's probably worth trying.

Last year I always tried to get down earlier than majority but unfortunately it's quite a large yard and there's always one that'll beat you

As for leaving out a haynet....unfortunately that won't make the slightest difference as he won't even eat his breakfast in these cases :(

Many thanks for your replies.....I'll let you know how it goes!
