im moving my horse next week form yorkshire down to berkshire. Just a quick question - when i get him there, am i best off to put him out in the field (there are a few different paddocks so out on his own or with other horses?) or leave him stabled for the night, then put him out the following day?

At the moment he is out 24/7 (he gets haylage daily so he will be used to having it for when he travels), so im thinking he will be best off out in the feild, but on his own. What does everyone else think?

i dont like putting horses out on the their own as think it makes them more stressed would just turn out as long as horse is ok with one other horse

I'd put him out with another quiet horse who won't wind him up and will let him rest! He will probably appreciate the company as will be a bit worried from being in a new place.

I would turn him out with a companion (or at least with one in an adjoining field so he can see he is not alone) and observe for a while. If he goes out with another horse there may be the usual squeals etc but its all part of the meet and greet, there should be no real problems. Best of luck!

Totally depends on what time of day you arrive at your destination. I would never put a horse out in a strange field if the time of arrival is late; therefore I would stable or keep overnight in a small corral. However if you arrive late morning/early afternoon then it should be fine to turn out into the field.

I'd be surprised if they let you put your horse out with the other before it has been wormed?
When I moved mine she had to go in a field alone at first, double electric fenced from the rest until worm count was done then she was put in with the others.

I too am wondering about the worming situation - many yards insist on them being stabled overnight but if they allow individual turnout at first then I'd do that.

Out of interest, which yard will you be at?

I moved fields a few days ago, having 3 horses I took my little arab first. I had a stable to put her in, but decided turning out to be a better option while I was gone for twenty mins to bring the others, no longer.

I got back to find that she had torn through fencing and a hedge to the neighbours horses and was covered in cuts from head to toe.

After this and she is used to being on her own while the two big girls are out being ridden, I would advise you turn your horse out with another. A strange field and horses next door can turn into an accident.

As I mentioned my two year old is so used to having hours on her own and because it was a strange field and new horses next door she went crazy.

Good luck, am sure you will gets lots of different advise and only you can assess your own horse. Unfortunately for me, I got it badly wrong. I considered the hedging and fencing to be a huge screen and perfectly safe.

OMG your poor horse, what a shame you must of been really stressed out.

I agree that horses can react badly when left in a strange field alone however some yards will simply not let you graze them with others straight away, hence the reason mine was put out with electic fencing between them- if they want to get through they wont hurt themselves like they would on a proper fence or hedge
