Potentially stupid question lol....

My 2 Sports Horses and Breton cob live out 24/7 with no rugs at present but in a couple of weeks are moving to a livery yard where they will be stabled at night. Will they need stable rugs as they wont be able to move about as much to keep warm..??? None are clipped and the cob is very overweight.

I would have thought they would be fine without rugs as they will be sheltered from the wind and rain. If you do find that they need rugs in the future you can always use their turnouts on them in the stable to save you having to get 2 sets of rugs for each horse and having to change them a couple of times a day. Also stable rugs tend to soak up pooh and pee and become disgusting whereas it only goes as far as the surface on a turnout.

Perhaps a light one or a fleece for the sporty ones. Also depends on your stabling. We have old brick stables in a barn which doesn't get much light so is quite cold. If they're wooden ones though they tend to insulate a bit better.

No I would think they will be fine HHH. :)

It's the forage a horse intakes that produces the energy to warm them up, so provided they get enough hay/haylege overnight they will be absolutely fine, given they are used to being out without rugs too.

Best thing though if you are worried is just feel their armpits before you leave each night to get a better idea.

Enjoy your new yard.:)

Thanks for the replies :)
Been stressing about making sure they are all comfy. The Breton is actually my friends (but she doesnt post here).

Thanks Moomin...moving them to a yard is going to be easier for when my daughter is in hospital etc so will hopefully make life that bit better for all of us :)
