Stable rug question!

This may sound like a stupid question but why do people use stable rugs when there horses are in rather then using a turnout rug?

At my previous yard the horses had outdoor rugs on in and out of the stable. Was wondering if there was a particular reason for changing them?

To be honest it is personal choice.
I'm the only person at my yard that just uses turnout rugs 24/7 when stabled or out.
As long as you check them over daily and the rug fits well i don't see the problem.
Rugs these days are breathable and much better materials etc.
I hate taking a warm rug off to replace with a cold stable rug just because they have come in for the night.
Plus leaving turnout rugs on when wet dry quicker, as long as the horse is dry underneath whats the harm.
 
Some people keep the turnout rugs on in the stable if they're wet - they dry better on the horse rather then off (if you are without suitable drying arrangements). I, personally, like to change to a stable rug not for any particular reason other than it's bedtime and I wouldn't want to go to bed in my dayclothes! :)

No reason at all to change it, modern rugs are quite breathable and you'll find a lot of people use outdoor rugs whilst in the stable. Equally a lot of people do change.

One reason to change might be that if the outdoor rug is wet and could be heavy the horse has to carry that heavy rug around until it dries.

One reason not to change could be if rug is dry and horse is warm, why change it into a cold rug that it has to warm up again!

Absolutely personal choice - my personal choice is to change as I think stable rugs are generally lighter in terms of physical weight rather than 'warmth' weight.
 
i tend to use both. i use my stable rugs as an under rug rather than having a hw turnout which i ahve to lug about so it means when wet i can just take thin top layer off and horsey is still toasty. although if in for a long period of time ie when frozen over i usually always just ahve stable rugs on as they tend to be lighter fro the horse but just as warm.
 
I put a blanket underneath her TO when its really cold then when she comes in i used to take off the TO leaving her warm blanket underneath and just replace the TO with her stable rug, that way she still stays warm underneath :)
 
I have sold all my stable rugs now they live in their NZ. don't see the point in changing them

they warm when they go out . The ONLY stable rugs i have is their thickest 14 oz ones as all but the donkey have fal goliaths ( £300 ) rug and i don't want the goliaths covered in poo. all the other weights 4 0z 7 oz 12 oz they use NZ

also I have 9 equines to care for not inc the DIY , its all very well if you only have 1 or 2 rugs to change but if you have 9 to change and some of those wear 3-4 rugs in winter I bet some here wouldnt changed their own, some of the liveries change them my horses don't. the number of times i took of a wet rug at night into a dry rug, then in the morning a nice toasty horse *wallop* wears a nice cold soggy wet rug again doesn't make sense IMO

Thanks guys! Thought it might be silly question but i guessed it prob was just personal choice. Debating whether to buy my first/new horsey a stable rug!
 
I use stable rugs, well cotton sheets really, one, maybe two at a time, but still exclusively for indoor wear, at the moment it is only for night times, day time it is still in the mid 20's so no rugs required outside as yet.:)

When the weather gets a bit nippier and the 2 stalled horses need TO's of whatever weight then they will sleep in them too. If you take a damp/wet rug off where I live it will be frozen solid in the morning and of no use to man nor beast!;):D
 
You've got me thinking now. I've always changed rugs when i've brought them in but it makes sense just to have turnouts and I bet they repel stable stains better!
