stable rugs

hi, i know it sounds daft but ive never needed a stable rug before (horse has always been in turn out rugs), so im wondering if there is anything i need to look out for?
Also, what weight of rug is needed? For my turnout rugs i have a light, medium and heavy rugs, i guess i need a couple of different weights of stable rug so what do i go for?
I know its summer and im asking about rug but im trying to get organised now! lol

I have a medium weight and a heavy, um and another heavy and a super heavy with a neck

. But if I was starting from scratch i would just buy a mw and a heavy with a neck that can be removed/folded back. I just use a fleece as a lightweight.
 
So is the horse being stabled for the first time? It depends on his type and if he's clipped mainly - a clipped TB would obviously need a full neck heavyweight one whereas an unclipped native wouldnt need one at all!

Depending on your turn out rugs, a lot of modern ones can be worn in the stable as well nowadays. I think as long as they're breathable. So you could think about doing that, would save you money!

Personally, I very rarely stable any of mine so I mainly use stable rugs for travelling and standing about at winter competitions. I have a lightweight one which I use in the Autumn when its getting chilly, a medium weight, heavy weight and a heavy full neck! But then I have 4 horses and they share those! It's a good idea to get a full neck though, just because you can turn it back it you want.
 
We used to have a plethora of rugs for our horses - in fact, we still do - but for the last 8 years, following other people, I no longer change my horses' rugs at night when they come in from the field. Shock, horror, I can hear you all from here! I too was horrified initially when I saw others do it, but now, I do likewise. For the depth of winter, I buy top quality, heavy, full necked rugs for my brood. The TBs, subject to weather conditions, have one or two layers of stable rugs under their turn outs, but the rugs remain in situ from field to stable, to field the next morning. Buying good qualituy rugs means that I've never had problems with water penetration, and my horses remain warm and snug whatever the conditions. And....I never have damp rugs hanging around, either! Most of my friends at other yards do likewise now. Yes, I can imagine the number of people who will be horrified at my regime, but IT WORKS! I have never had a damp, miserable horse and the time saving with my brood is MEGA! Stable rugs are fine.......under turnouts when it's VERY cold, that is!
 
I should add, that although I have 4 stable rugs I actually usually leave my TO rug on over night

well im glad to hear that other people use turn out rugs for stabling. My horse lives out most of the time but comes in overnight through winter and i have always left his turnout on (ive sometimes swapped turnout rugs if he comes in with a soaking rug, although he is always dry underneath, i just feel better putting a dry one on if its soaking!) Im looking to move him to a yard (i currently rent a field) and i thought people would be appalled that i left my horse stabled with a turnout on! Glad other people do it, it def saves money! May buy a warm fleece for under his TO rug, at the mo i put another TO rug over the top when its really cold.

Well if others leave their stabled horses in TO rugs then i shall carry on doing the same. My horse is never cold or wet as i too buy decent rugs (in the sales if i can lol!). Might jut get a fleece to keep him snug!
 
wouldnt harm getting a couple if you can... if to ends up ripped etc, then you will have something to put on him. Couple of cheapo ones will do for stable, as long as ur horse is not a rug wrecker
