So my horse is moving to livery from living mainly out. She currently wears turnout rugs and has quite a wardrobe. I haven’t needed any stable rugs. What does she need?

She’s a warm horse, with most of her coat on. Out in 50g tonight.

Thank you.

I would not worry about stable rugs

Mine live in their turn/outs

  1. saves time changing them
  2. rugs dry off better on the horse
  3. they keep the warmth from the night under the rugs when they turnout
  4. Less washing rugs with the rug cleaning
  5. less money to spend on rugs
  6. keeps poo from going on the horse, specially a grey.

    I have

  • thermalux
  • summer sheets
  • one heavyweight as they are not allowed to stay in their Fal Goliaths over night (to expensive to ruin)

I have a fleece and a 200g for them. They aren’t particularly hot horses so one of those, or both together if it’s well below 0, are all that’s needed. Mine tend to stay in turnouts too, but a stable rug seems more comfy somehow if they are in (which doesn’t happen often).

Mine are left naked most of the time in the stable unless they are clipped, then I keep the turnout liner on and put a very thin stable quilt over the top or a fleece rug depending on how cold it is.

Both of mine have a few stable quilts and a couple of fleece rugs and that's it.

Old Horse lives in his turnout rugs. He has three: full neck heavyweight winter, no neck medium, rainsheet.
He has a medium waffle for after a bath, unless it's heatwave weather.
He also has a full neck fly rug.
