Morning,

There has been a couple of horse theives in my area and only yesterday one at a yard less than two miles from my yard (owners live on site too!) :(

Suffice to say I am VERY worried. I am now looking to put some kind of alarm system for my stable as I feel my horse is extremely vulnerable and I am worried sick.

Can you recommend a alarm system for use on a stable block? Either one we can fit ourselves or have professionaly installed.

I have seen one that distributes a laser beam across the yard and if broken it alerts via text message and also an alarm is sounded. So far its the best one I have come across but I was wondering if anyone can recommend anything else from personal experience?

Many thanks

I am in Chertsey too.

I heard that a horse was stolen last week from a private yard in Chobham and like you was informed by my friend that her livery yard near to us was broken into and loads of stuff stolen. Luckily horses were not touched.

All very worrying and I dont want to take any chances :(

Maplin do an excellent range for sensible prices. My OH- computer Nerd- fitted them in a morning and with a DNS thingie, its coupled upto the web so we can watch the boys on internet/iphone etc :) did such a great job he's fitted the same for friends :)

We've got no less than 4 cameras on my little yard. Our neighbour has a beam thing that makes a loud noise should anyone cross it - it's not an alarm though.

How does the beam thing work with things like fox & dear around?

A while back our local tack shop was advertising/bumming up a padlock thingey with an alarm that sounds if anyone tries to tamper with it. It cost about £25 but I haven't seen them advertising it since - so perhaps it wasn't the success they'd hoped for.

Anyone else heard of these things?

The text alarm that sounds if a sensor is interrupted sounds good, BUT like someone has said, what about an animal going across and setting it off? We've got a pussy cat (not ours) who comes into the yard here so wouldn't want to be got out in the middle of the night just coz puss has decided she wants to pay a visit!!!

At the moment I rely on the dogs to sound the alarm; however they do like their home comforts so if sprawled in front of the Rayburn wouldn't much rate their success on sentry duty!

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

The security system with the laser beam, I believe you can set the height of the laser so maybe set it to stable door height so avoiding cats/wildlife setting it off.

My husband works in I.T and is a bit of a computer whizz so I am sure he can rig something up on a par with your OH Darkley Dreaming Dex. I will get him to check out Maplin. Love the idea of being able to watch my ned remotely when I want :D

Actually Darkly_Dreaming_Dex can you tell me a bit more about your security set up? Is it just CCTV or do you have an alarm system integrated aswell?

PM me if you prefer.

Many thanks

Just another course of action but while you are doing this, its probably not a bad idea to tell your neighbours that there have been thefts and you would really appreciate it if they would call you if they didn't recognise someone or took down number plates of cars that were lurking (seeing as most thieves will have visited a couple of times to look over the security). Also, try to think outside of the obvious so while you have looking at safeguaring the entrances, think about access from your fields etc. Yard I was at a while ago had the whole hog and the thieves came from behind the yard, over 3 fields to steal jumps in the fields - away from the cameras. I am also in Surrey so that news is worrying..

i keep my horse at home, i have CCTV in my stables and yard they are linked to the tvs in my house , my Husband fitted them for me , my stables are only 30 steps from my front door , its great when there is nothing on the tv you can just watch your horse happily munching in its stable.
