I have moved yards this year and the new private yard has stables but the one I have been allocated is only 10x12, now my boy is 15hh. We think he got cast in a 14x14 stable and that's how he ended up with a chip fracture in his hock. Ideally I want him to live out but if needs be would I be ok to put him in there?

Would you use it in an emergency?
(Yard owner has offered to have the little wall at the back knocked down which would make it about 13x12)

Any advice welcome. Thanks

What an obliging YO for a start.:)

10 x 12 is fine for a 15h, my stalls are 10 x 11 and I have 16h QH's in them and they are solid beasts.

I'd prefer the stalls larger but short of ripping my barn apart and rebuilding I can't open anymore up and the horses are happy enough. Big downside of smaller stalls is that beds tend to get dirtier :(

Ditto this. Just buy an anti-cast roller for him would be my suggestion.

mine are all 10 x 12 aswell, I have 2 x 15.2 solid types, 1 cob and 1 IDX and they have no problem and had a 16.1 livery in one for 2 years and she was fine, a lot of yards have 12 x 12 boxes which I think is pretty standard so your horse having a problem in a 14 x 4 was very unusual as he is only 15 hands, where I teach they have 17.2's in that size stable.

Thank you for your comments, I am going to try and keep him out as much as possible but if he needs to stay in his stable should be sufficient. I may well invest inane anti-cast roller, god knows how he got cast in the larger stable but he did so would be worth getting a roller for him.

What an obliging YO! Personally I would take up his offer - you may as well have the largest space possible for your horse. In the worst case scenario should he have to be box-rested for any reason he will at least have a decent space to be in. I'm sure given the choice he would prefer a big "bedroom"!
