I was watching something about the RSPCA and they commented that horses should not be kept in an area less than twice their length and twice their length in width.
Mine are only in for a a maximum of nine hours but their stables are only 11.5 feet by 11.5 feet (they are 13.2hh and 14.3hh) I've always thought this was fine

What sizes are your horses/ponies and what size stables do they have?

16.1 and stable is 12x 14 last horse was 16 hh and had a 14 x 14 stable so about right according to their recommendations, but sometimes the RSPCA t.v stuff is a load of rubbish!

Mishky is 17.3, his stable is 16ft x 16ft
Ella is 17 hh, her stable is 20 ft by 13ft 6in
Ljufur is 14.2, his stable is 16ft by 11ft 9in
Charlie is 8hh

his stable is 9ft by 13ft 6in.

All are funny sizes, but they all have loads of room.

my 16.2hh was in a 12 x 12 but have just moved him and he is now in approx 12 x 14 - shetland is in the same but thats only because the stables are the same size

I have a 14.2 and 16hh they both have a 12 x 12 each.
i would like bigger - but thats just the way it is. They are happy and comfortable though so im not worried if im honest.

My stable is 10X12 and it's pretty much the biggest in a yard of 35 stables. The smallest stable is 7x9 and my 14.2 haflinger (built like a rhino!) is perfectly fine to stand in it during the day but I wouldn't leave him there overnight.

I think the bigger the better obviously, Im shocked by what some people think is acceptable...!

I have 2 stables, one is 12 wide but about 24 wide so I can easily put my 2 small ponies in it together no problem. The other one I think is 15 by 15 and is ok for mine, but Id prefer it was bigger for my 16hh if he was in more often. He's only in occassionally for shows though, my shetlands the one who comes into it every night so its HUGE for her!

MM what are you shocked about, the small size of stables? I've read the thread and nothing sounds too small to me, so could you advise us what you're talking about?
In our case we have a mix of old buildings and purpose built stabling. If somewhere is existing with stone walls do you think we should abandon it as a box or attempt to knock it in to a larger stable?
Quite frankly you sound very silly claiming you want bigger than 15 ' by 15' for a 16 hh horse, that's easily big enough, if you had lots of horses can you imagine the bedding costs for huge stables? !
I get the feeling you are making people who rent stables feel they are doing badly by their animals by not having massive boxes.. I would far rather see a well fed and bedded horse in a small stable than a neglected one in a big one. DIY liveries often have no choice over how big their boxes are, and there are an awful lot of them keeping their horses this way...

How do they define length? The length of the body, chest to hindquarters? or the length nose to tail?
If is was nose to tail, mine would need 20 ft x 20ft
iif body, then 15 ft x 15 ft.HIs box is 14 x 17 and he has more than enough room. But he has spent 3 days in a 10 x 12 (well, about 20 out of 24 hrs) at times when camping!
Temporary and show stabling is usually 10 ft x 12 ft and the largest horses are quite ok for thier overnight stay.

How do they define 'kept' - does that mean as in permanently stabled or just stabled overnight?

They didn't define 'length' or if it only applied to permanently stabled equines. This was one of the reasons I was asking
