how much would stable staff in racing yard usually get paid ??

what is the most you could earn working in a stable??

i really want to work in racing but i don't know if i could live off a stable person wage

There are proper wage standards for racing - someone else would be better placed to advise you on that.

As for whether you could live on that wage - well that depends on how you expect to live! Many stable staff live in quarters on site, so no rent to pay, so in that sense it's definitely enough to live on. If you want to live in a seaside penthouse and drive an Aston Martin, probably not :p

Racings minimum wage is about 50p above national minimum wage. You get paid overtime when you are away racing. You also get Pool Money every 3 months which is a small percentage of any prize money won by the yard horses in that time frame.

Its better constructed and regulated than any other form or equine work.

Racing is a life but it's certainly not a living.

Terms & conditions for stable staff in racing is - http://www.britishhorseracing.com/inside_horseracing/pdf/terms_and_conditions_for_stable_staff.pdf

What they DON'T tell you is how you can do better. It's a long time since I worked in racing - in Australia - but I found most racehorse owners were quite generous if you did their horses well. When they came to visit at the yard and you showed them their horse (and said nice things about it - even if it was a ratbag) way back then they'd tip $10 - 20 each time. And race days could be even better - it was quite regular for owners to give me between $20 and 50 and say: 'have a bet to win' (knowing the horse better than the owner, I'd either pocket it - or back them for a place!) In an average week, I made as much in tips as in wages!

It does very much depend where you work. I know a few people on the last yard I worked at who had considered getting out of racing, and retraining to be a plumber or similar, but couldn't afford to because by the time they had rented a family home they would be worse off. Some owners are very generous, again it depends on the yard, and the individuals, plus it isn't unheard of for people to make a lot backing horses from the yard.
If you want to earn really good money, Australia is much better paid, but they won't take people from the UK without a lot of experience, so its a great industry to work in if you want to travel the world while you are young.

It is governed by NTF and agreed every year but it also depends on the type of work you do and how old you are and how many years experience you have in racing. Then there is overtime for going racing and pool money which is dependant on how much the yard has earned during the quarter.

the yard i worked at i started off at £180 a week but then accomodation was free. after 6 months it went up to £210 then after a year £260. if we lived out then it was an extra £30. like it has been said you do get pool money but how much depends on how big the yard and how much prize money is won.

i used to work for a NH trainer near York. but i left a couple of years ago and no longer work with horses. dont want to mention names as im pretty sure we arent really "allowed" on this forum.
