My mare takes great delight in trashing her stable out of boredom. Is there anything I can use to make it more fun for her? I don't want to spend loads and she will eat a likit within an hour. She's in an American barn so can see other horses.

Suggestions welcome!

The new likit toys are ideal. I think they are called Boredom Buster. My mare used to have hers eaten within 5 minutes and I was on the verge of giving up but with this she has had the same likit now for over 3 weeks! They still hang from roof but when the horse licks it it spins making it much harder for them to get hold of. Got mine off Ebay here is the link http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110637149159#ht_500wt_898
Also use the decahedron balls and cut chunks of carrot and apples up to go in them. Big chunks so it takes longer to get them out!

My mare loves the giant tennis balls on a rope you get for dogs. I tie it up and she spends ages bashing them around then peeling the covering off and shredding it  Luckily they do them in the local cheap shop so I can get them loads cheaper than in a pet store!

The decahedron is my shire x's favourite thing in the world, he spends hours knocking it around field or stable. He often ignores his hay and plays with this first. I put hi fibre cubes, happy hoof or chopped up carrots in. It was the best £20 I've spent xx

Turn out!

Your horse has told you she is bored so unless in for veterinary reasons (in which case swedes etc hanging up in middle of stable are quite had to bite and can keep them amused) turn her out. Simple :-)

Can't - she has to stay in at night! She was on box rest for 2 weeks but was settled throughout but is back to being turned out in the day again. Will try hanging a swede up. Can't hang anything off the roof as its a barn (roof too high).

Ditto - my boy has been on box rest for 5 months now recovering from a fracture, and his 'ball' has been a lifesaver! He loves it and whenever he looks like he is a bit unsettled, I just fill it up again and chuck it in and it keeps him occupied for ages! Its been more effective than sedaline now he is allowed to move around!!
