Stable under turnout - yes or no?

Thinking of getting the amigo medium stable instead of an under rug, to stick under his other horseware rugs.

He lives out mostly, next to a wind farm, where I was once picked up and carried off by the wind. So I think he deserves it, the skinny runty TB he is!

i use stables as an under rug.

I keep the same rug on at night too - just pop a different stable on top.

I hate taking off their warm TO rugs and them getting cold while i put a stable rug on - but then mine are wimps!

I find that a stable rug (or under rug) used under a turnout, if it gets wet will 'wick' up, and soak the horse under the turnout rug. I would rather layer two turnout rugs, which are both waterproof. I would think this is especially true if the horse is subject to both wind and rain, as the top turnout will blow up and expose the under rug.

Also I stable mine in his turnout, but I will always take it off at night, groom and then replace with either the same or a different rug.

we always double up on turnout rugs insread of a stable or underrug, i found in rug they always got wet, prob ok if your only turning out for short periods

My stable rug under turnout caused the turnout to blow forward as he stood with his bum to the wind (it was a very windy day though). It was too shiney to offer any resistance, so didn't pan out well!

i would defo use a t.o under a t.o, a stable rug would get wet and then your left with a wet and cold horse!

Should be fine as in theory the stable rug shouldnt get wet as you have a waterproof turnout on top. If it gets wet then its time for a new turnout surely???????

I use either a stable rug, underrug or turnout rug depending on what is around.
You can avoid all the problems listed above if you make sure your stable/under rug is not larger than your turnout and secure them together. I usually do this by tying the stable rug (from the fillet string ring) to the turnout (by either fillet string rings or leg strap ones) using baler twine.

I use stable rugs underneath my turnouts - the turnouts are one size too big so they totally cover the stable rugs all round.
I would worry about the weight of using two turnouts on top of each other?

We use an Amigo stable rug under the same size Amigo medium weight turnout, the pony lives out 24/7 with a field shelter, the stable rug being the same make is a perfect fit, hasn't got wet, hasn't slipped and hasn't rubbed. Once a month if we get a mild or sunny day I take it off in the morning, wash and dry it and put it back on in the evening. We are finding he is warmer like this than in a heavy weight rug. If it got particularly cold we have a second Amigo turnout which we could put over the top.

Fine - Henry is currently wearing a stable rug under his TO and did this quite happily all last winter too. The trick is, as someone says above, to have a decent size TO on top so that most of the stable rug is hidden by that. My TO is long in the body as well as length so adequately covers the stable rug with no issues!

that's exactly what i do. I have a medium amigo stable under an amigo turnout. She's very cozy. Bum edge might get a bit wet if they stand with their backs to the rain, but mine are in at night so I can change it if needs be. If it's dry & cold, the stable rug stays on under a heavier (rambo) stable rug.
