We've got a 15.1 connemara being stabled at pc camp soon, and we're are not sure what feed to put him on!?
Want something low cal low sugar, but something that's not going to make him sluggish as they are being worked 4 hours a day for 5 days!
Any suggestions?!!! Thanks

We used to use high fibre cubes when our pony went to camp. Normally she wouldn't have much in the way of hard feed because she was a good doer and living out. We introduced small amounts of cubes before camp then up to the recommended amount during camp week.

He's currently turned out during the day brought in at night, he's not on any hard feed currently as luke said above he is a good doer. I just need recommendations on low sugar/cal feed that will not make them sluggish so I can start feeding before camp!!!!

When I have taken mine camping I have just fed them whatever they normally have, and made up the feeds into plastic bags, with salt and any additives put in. I make up more feeds than I need, so if the horse flags a bit it can have a dinner as well as breakfast/ tea.

If he is on no feed currently then I would, as another poster said, get him used to a high fibre feed a couple of weeks beforehand so you can gauge how he is.

Have a lovely time!

Mine is on Pure Easy, but have also previously fed Spillars High Digestible Fibre Nuts. I even did 2 3 day events on those, they are non heating and as I said I just gave 3 meals when she was tired.

What hay/haylage wil they get? Our RC camp uses Somerford a Park they get really good quality haylage ad lib so I have never taken too much hard feed for my good doers. Personally I would feed a handful of pasture mix and perhaps something like Alpha A light to get the bit used to the feed, then up the levels at camp if you feel the horse needs more energy etc. then owner the levels and stop when back home again.

This is as least as important as what hard feed to give. As others have said, get him gradually used to the new diet weeks before camp.

My Mum used to be secretary of our local PC. Despite all members being reminded on how to prepare their ponies for camp, every year she'd spend hours at night walking out colicking ponies, who hadn't coped with the transition from being grass kept.

I'd say something like a handful of speedibeet / similar and a handful of unmolassed grass chaff would probably suffice if he doesn't normally get hard feed. I'd introduce gradually a week or so before if not used to hard feed.

He shouldn't have problem with the transition and camp is at the beginning of augus and we Will introduce the new feed now. Hopefully everything goes smoothly!!!
