Stabled at night to 24/7 turnout.

As the title, I am moving yards and will be able to turn out 24/7 which I can;t at the moment. I am not concerned about the welsh, there are numerous fattie paddocks with hedging around and shelters.

Vet has advised my old horse (29) would greatly benefit from 24 hour turnout due to stiffness when stabled over night, and a cough. He will be on good grass with a shelter and we have rugs a plenty. At the moment he comes in overnight and has a feed and large haynet.

I will continue with the feed (if he wants it) but don't know whether to feed him hay? Sounds really stupid but guess I'm just paranoid about him due to age.

I guess it depends on how much grass there is at the new yard, but I would be inclined to start off feeding your oldie hay (if you can? Will he be out on his own?) and see if he eats it or not, and monitor his weight situation.

if you aren't concerned about your older chaps weight, and you have decent grazing, then I wouldn't bother with the hay. Maybe for the first few days put a bit out so that he comes off it a bit more gradually. I'm sure they'll both do well being out - ours are out 24/7 when there aren't frosts and are def healthier becuase of it. No filled legs, snotty noses or coughs!
