I'd say even in a smaller stable you're still going to get the same amount of mess, just compressed into a smaller area. (In fact my pony makes MORE mess and wastes more bedding in a smaller stable) If you want to cut down on bedding and you have matts have you tried just doing a corner bed in the spot where they wee and not bedding the rest of the stable. That way they've still get more space to move in and as a bonus some of the poo should be off the shavings and so won't take any bedding with it when you scoop it up. This used to work very well with my boy in a stable that was far too big to bed the whole thing. Apparently wood or straw pellets can be good for really messy or wet horses. You do a sort of deep litter where you skip out every day and take the wet out once a week... think you tend to need about 2 bags a week to maintain a decent bed and it's not supposed to smell if managed right
