As some may know, I'm taking dex to camp in August, Friday to Sunday so only two nights stabled but it was a NIGHTMARE last year. Literally. I was checking on him at 2am. He is stabled overnight in winter but out in the summer. Last year he attempted to barge out every time I went in and out the stable, he wouldn't go back in again once we'd ridden, he opened the stable at midnight once and tried to jump out. This was mainly due to him being next to the porta loo and so people constantly fussed him and in turn rewarded him with polos etc when he kicked the door. So, this year I've asked for him to be in the barn so its quieter and more secure for him. So, how do I keep him in?! I'm taking his lick this year to settle him when we get there and between lessons but I don't know what else to do. To stop him getting out I'll put a clip on his door but that's all I can do really. Any advice re barging and convincing him to get in the actual syabket would be much appreciated ;)

At driving comps we used to stable on a log so the horse had its headcollar on and the leadrope went through a metal tie ring and had a piece of wood at the end. The horse could move to get food and water and lie down but not wander off, that might be an option although there is no quick release element involved in an emergency

You can use a quick release fastening to the headcollar, but I would want to train the horse at home. By a log, I assume you mean the round wooden ball used in ye olden days.

I would do some work with him before going, get him used to being in his box just for a few hours each weekend or when you have time, even just 10 mins after riding would be useful, he should remember his manners if they are properly instilled just because it is summer should not mean he does what he wants. If he goes in and has a token feed, not a lick as that is pure sugar and may have the effect of making him more hyper, always have a net tied up ready for him, he should start to accept that this is routine and be easier when you go to camp when he ought to be hungry and tired so should appreciate a feed and rest time.

I think this is a good idea. My mare can be a nightmare when you take her out of her current comfort zone ie stabling her out of the blue in the summer and I do have to do this sort of thing to accustom her to it.

Cheers, think I'll start putting him in a stable after I've ridden whilst I'm doing odd jobs, then he might be more willing!! I left him in whilst I taught a lesson the other day so only for half an hour on his own, but still started with the barging etc. Got him turned round and in again of course but not helpful!
Webble, unfortunately he would bmnot do that in a million years, would probably break his neck :/

Def start early.
I got CF into a routine 3 weeks before camp last year (4 nights away). He came in during the day, then extended it to a long day by the week before, 5 days before I got him used to being only out for the morning maximum. Made it so much easier for him and me.

Put yourself in your Fuzzies shoes OP, having been out all the time and then going to a party including sleep-overs - its going to be exciting :)
Take out the novelty of being in, and you should get part of it nailed :)

Hope you manage to enjoy this years camp :)
