stabling - bit of dilema

here we go again!

winter is arriving which means in a couple of weeks we will be moving to the winter grazing. why is this a problem you ask?

well stable life becomes a bit of a nightmare as all horses have to be stabled at night. every year we go thro this but this year im not sure i want to join in with the circus.

so i was thinking about stabling my mare all thro the week and turning out at weekends only. question is do you think this is fair on a horse that has lived out all summer?

Definitely not. Imo horses need time to just be horses. If you have turn out you should use it. Plus you are likely to have a nutcase after 5 days stuck in. What are the problems? Is there a solution to them?
 
Thing is, two of ours won't stay out for longer than they think is necessary! One fence runs and the other jumps out and comes back to the stables! It depends on your stable size, the exercise or paddock turnout available and horse's temperament. Our stables are enormous and turnout is just a change of scene in winter.

We had to do this one winter (keep them in as no turnout) but they did have an hour in the sand school with another horse in the morning and again in the evening, as well as being ridden as much as possible.

It is possible but I couldn't do it again though, it was horrible!
 
well my horse stresses when 2 or less horses are out (only in the winter turnout) morning time or evening time. so i have to wait until at least 2 other horses are turned out and everyone turns out at different times. so normally ends up with turnout time of 930/10.

everyone then starts to bring in around 4pm but this slowly becomes earlier and earlier as they dont want their horses out when others are coming in so ends up about 3pm. so i then end up bringing in at 2.30/3 so my horse isnt out when only a few in the field. it becomes a silly race to get your horse in before anybody elses!

right the dilema is i can go with this but then rely heavily on others turning out at a reasonable time so that i can then put mine out and also that they bring in at a reasonable time so i dont have to get mine in at lunchtime! other thing is that everyone seems to change their mind daily as to the times they chuck out/bring in

it would just be much easier to be out of the whole circus of it and do my own thing.
 
Can you not have a word with everyone and ask if they will turn out or bring in your horse. You could offer to do theirs at some point. When I was on a livery yard we took it in turns to feed and turn out so everyone got to have a bit of a lie in occasionally. It also meant the horses all went out at the same time so none of them got stressed.
 
Do you have the option of assisted DIY at your yard? People surely must need to go to work - and at my yard horses are going out in the morning from 6.00am onwards.

Similarly horses start comming in around the 4.00pm mark - and anything up to around 6.00 - because again people are in work.

But we do have assisted DIY - so this means that our horses can be put out/brought in for us - with others.
 
No way I would/could do that- one of mine in particular stresses up if kept in...I can just about manage a day in/day out routine if need be.....but on thw hole mine go out regardless of the weather...unless the yard is iced over and its dangerous.

Depends on your horse though, and if its happy to be in...I would want an hours turnout at least for the horse to have a stretch/roll and for me to give the stable a sort out etc.
 
Personally I would try and get your horse used to staying out rather than coup her up. You would only be stabling her during the week for your benefit and would probably end up with a more stressed horse! I do know how time consuming it is and inconvenient to have to work around others but is there anybody else who could help you?
