Hi everyone, just wondering if you could give me your opinions on this idea. I've been discussing cheaper ways of keeping the horses and saving time through the winter with work etc so the deal would be this...
Stable for one horse, with free use of brand new 20x40 surface, all year turnout, but no hacking....in return for livery exercising another horse and doing turnout/feeding duties for all 4 of the horses and occasionally mucking out. Feed, forage and bedding to be paid for by owners. Competing available on the YO's horse, with use of lorry but entry fee's to be paid by rider.
Does that even make sense? lol I hope so. Do you think it's fair? Or what could be changed to make it fair? I think there's perks on both sides, but I don't know how well it will work. It would be a set up with a friend, mates-rates kind of thing, so just want to check out if it's a fair deal :)
BUT if it's a totally silly idea point that out too, we're just throwing things about at the mo, thinking it all through. There's still other options on both parts though.
Celebrations on offer for any replies, although please take bounties first :p

ooh I love the bounty ones! But I've given up chocolate until I'm 30 so I'll have to stick to the malteasers as they don't count.

I have been in 2 situations like this, both times as the livery.
Situation 1 was where my horse acted as a companion to the owner's horse, and I was their groom. I had free livery and hay but provided my own feed and bedding, and in return I looked after the horses during the week including exercise. I also housesat while they went away (cat, dogs, chickens, and SO MUCH watering) which was about 8 weeks a year. how the other half live! I thought I had quite a good deal, the owners found me very useful so it worked well, although I did feel a bit like a slave - like I was constantly endebted to them and had to do everything they wanted, even if it meant getting up at 5am to plait the horse before riding mine before work - that sort of thing. I ended up resenting them - but that's another story.

The other situation worked better. I was charged a set amount per week for livery and use of facilities, and I worked for the owners as a groom, and charged them an hourly rate. It was my responsibility to keep a tally of my hours, and then every month or so they would deduct my livery from my earnings and give me a big wad of cash!
That way it seemed fairer for both of us, and everybody knew where they stood.
Hope that helps! and thanks for the malteasers!

yeahh, that is a help :) I'm hoping as we're both in fairly similar financial situations, just one of us happens to have stabling (albeit pretty shabby) and the other has time to exercise, we thought/hoped it might work. The competing would be a bit of a bonus (although whenever) in return for the odd bit of house and chicken sitting :) Maybe doing it the second way would be better though, we just couldn't decide what the livery rate would be or how much to charge for exercise :/
andddd pleeeeeeeease take the bounty's, there's only a tiny bit of chocolate over all the ickyyy coconutty yuck :p lol although I'm not too keen on malteasers either...

Well if you're friends and you're both prepared for a bit of give and take and you are quite clear about whose responsibilities are what then maybe you don't have to be so formal about it.
and you twisted my arm on the bounties. I'll eat the yum coconut bits now and save the chocolate for the mega choc-binge I have planned for my birthday :D:)

ETA HOW are you not keen on the malteasers? I don't much care for the milky ways.

eughh, can't stand bounty, actual malteasers are okay but the ones in a celebrations box are different somehow...I LOVE milky ways though, and the mars bars (it's the only time I can eat them without mega guilt) the galaxy caramel are okay and so are the twix, but I don't much care for actual galaxy...and I can't stand nuts in chocolate so thats snickers out! I'm a fussy bugger when it comes to chocolate lol but PC have just given me a big box and two to my mum for helping out at camp
oh, and yeah, hopefully the horsey stuff will work out! glad you don't think it's a totally bad idea :p

It sounds like an amazing deal for someone BUT I would specify what you count as exercising e.g. how long you want the horse riding for and how often....

I don't like mars much or milky way or galaxy caramel. And I love the rest.

In conclusion: we should definitely share celebrations.

ahh good idea. we thought maybe we should have a diary, where we write down whats been done with the horse each day and any extra duties we do. Then at the end of the week/month have a look through, bill each other and see what the difference is. We're going to make a list of what we would charge for services, so mucking out, lunging, schooling etc. Hopefully that will work :)

Yes! I'm glad we've managed to get something out of this thread :) lol

If you cost your stable at £20 per week, you will see you are doing three horses for £3.00 a day, seems a bit one sided, but if you are happy and have the time available it will probably work out.
If she is providing feed and bedding them you are getting goods to value of £20-25.
that is £3.00 per day more.
I think I would make sure owner mucks her own horses out and leaves all grub ready for you to put in, you would skip out the riding horse, ride it and groom lightly, which would take an our and a half.
I think if you were doing this seven days a week you will get a bit fed up.

If livery is £25 a week .

Feed, rug and turnout three horses = 30 minutes x 5 days.
Groom/tack/ride. an average of = 1hr x 5 days.

Hourly rate of £7.
total value= £52.50p without mucking out 3 stables.

Therefore livery @£25 = 3.5 hours work.

oh, forgot to say, it was only working days! we're both around at weekends, but will help out/return favours if not :)

Would it really only take an hour a day? I need to time myself...I suppose if it's done on average though and I lunge maybe once a week it would work out.

So you think this is maybe a unfair? The thing is though, I would count competing her horse (who's well schooled and will jump a decent track of show jumps) as a bonus. And the use of her lorry whenever :/ Okay, back to the drawing board :) thankyouuuuuu
