Stabling in turnout rugs?

Is this the most annoying child in the world?

Just wanted people's views on this as I know some disagree with it. I personally have always stabled in turnout rugs, as long as the horse is dry underneath them and they have been given a brush when brought in I cant see the problem, It saves time on a morning when turning out and the rug dries quicker on the horse!

What does everyone else think?

I sometimes leave Ralph in a To, I did it last year as the people who were turning out could not tell the difference between a stable and turn out, leaving my stable rug trashed!

Yes, sometimes can also be the 'in a rush category'

Totally understand Pocket, I always remember coming to the yard after trusting my dad to turn my horse out, luckily it was dry. :rolling eye smiley:

Yep I do it all the time and have done for years It helps if the rugs are the breathable type though and personally think the cheaper rugs get far too heavy when wet to do this.

my answer is sometimes too
tonight she is in her turnout, she was dry underneath and the rug needs to dry on the outside, so she is wearing it to bed, i see nothing wrong with it at all personally as long as they are dry underneath

Not too keen myself, ours are not clipped and do not often need a stable rug, I tend to feel that they won't feel the benefit of a rug when turned out/will get too hot inside with a rug on.

I just think it seems really sloppy to leave one rug on 24/7. That must be uncomfortable, and any rubbing would be made worse. I can't see there is much wrong with it, but it just seems lazy and abit disgusting IMO. Its like wearing the same clothes day and night. The turnout rugs are generally stiffer than the cosy indoor ones too. I know changing rugs takes time, doing all ours every day takes about 30 mins. If you don't take the rug off how do you know if it leaked anywhere, or the horse has hurt itself.

Always. Since the invention of all these wonderful light Rambo's and Fal's I wouldn't bother changing rugs overnight unless it had leaked or was ripped.

Yes, I suppose I am a bit lazy aswell. I do take the rug off and give them a brush before putting it back on though.

When your already running 15 minutes late for work it's a godsend :p

I figure especially when it gets cold it must be nicer for them not to have to have a load of cold stable rugs/ damp turnouts put on. Especially as it will be warmer in the stable, in my opinion it isn't that necessary to change. Of course, it is worth checking underneath etc etc to check for rubbing, but if the rug is comfortable, breathable and dry inside why bother?

That said, I do change them myself. But, I know lots who don't. As someone said, I just like buying the new rugs etc etc, (but then, my stable is normally spotless, and everything is clean and tidy!)

J has so many of Hector's old stable rugs that I always change his over, seems a shame not to use them

The other two just have breathable turnouts which stay on in the stable, although I do tend to take them off in the evening and give them a flick over

I would like to but my boy refuses to wear a rug in his stable at night and would rip said rug off with his teeth! Can't afford to keep replacing them....

Where I'm stabled the YO does turnout in the mornings but charges extra to change rugs before doing so and horses are expensive enough without that. So my two just sleep in their outdoors.

However I do keep spares so if one is very wet it can be changed. And rugs are removed everydya to check for rubs/injuries etc.

Surely then you might as well change the rug anyway, if your taking it off then you wouldn't save a notable amount of time, I don't think, by putting the same rug back on.
I can't see there is anything wrong with using the same one twice, but I still wouldn't want to do it, I don't like the thought of them sleeping with wet mud on the rug

I am sorry to burst your bubble

. Of course some of them most definitely think they are as you described; at least the big Spotty Horse firmly believes he is human I fear!

Maybe that was part of my now destroyed view on horses

We use the FAL dual purpose rugs which are designed to be worn inside as well as outdoors. They get removed and replaced back on morning and night and we've never had any problems with them at all.

Personally I change my rugs, but as long as the rugs are re-positioned I guess there's not a problem. We were at a yard with no turnout for a couple of winters (but use of horsewalker everyday) and I did use a NZ on her in the stable as she was a white, disgusting, box-walker! The NZ didn't absorb the wee so much.............eugh!

But what happens when they are turned out 24/7? The new TO rugs are just a stable rug with a waterproof outer. If you have rubber matting stable rugs are bad.
