It varies - if they're coming in / going out every day then *generally* speaking the turnouts stay on. However, the weather in winter here is so crap that they're often confined to their stables for a few days in which case the stable rugs go back on (just to give the turnouts a rest

I just think it seems really sloppy to leave one rug on 24/7. That must be uncomfortable, and any rubbing would be made worse. I can't see there is much wrong with it, but it just seems lazy and abit disgusting IMO. Its like wearing the same clothes day and night. The turnout rugs are generally stiffer than the cosy indoor ones too.

But what happens when they are turned out 24/7? The new TO rugs are just a stable rug with a waterproof outer. If you have rubber matting stable rugs are bad.

I can tell you what happens with my three - they get fed morning and night, and their rugs are usually taken off, while they get a quick groom, then replaced.
If it is pi$$ing it down (i.e. all this summer
) I won't take them off fully, but undo the belly straps etc, and lift them to peer underneath for injuries/rubs.
I do have loads of rugs for each one of them...so if a rug got wet inside, or damaged, or just too dirty, I change them. I also change them according to the weather.

My horse has one TO rug that he wears indoors but he never wears it out!
It was given to me for free and its quite a heavy weight one with a half neck so he wears that in the stable at night in the winter. i prefer to turn him out in a full neck rug over the winter as he is fully clipped out.
The TO rug works well in the stable as it doesn't tend to smell as much as the stable rugs -he's a messy little sod and lies down in all his poo.
My horse was in his TO day and night last winter, it worked well and I'll probably do the same this year. I would hate to come in and have my warm rug to be whipped off and replaced with an ice cold one!
