My aunt lost one of her dogs yesterday..she was really old & had to be pts..so have been looking on a few rescue/rehome web sites to see if I can find her a new one to rehome & I think it is totally sickening that every other dog on the sites are staffys & yet I still see so many adverts for people selling staffy litters & advertising their stud dogs!! There are even 0-3 month staffy puppies in rescue shelters & yet more staffs are being bred when there are already sooo many without homes! It's so sad & I just wish they could put some sort of bar on staffs being bred.. I love staffs & would happily rehome one if I had a bigger house/garden!! We're ment to be a nation of animal lovers but when you read about how many staffs are pts each year & the lives these dogs have had prior to rescue..It really makes you question it!!

I know for sure we are not a nation of animal lovers at all. :(

We currently have 10 dogs in the rescue kennels (4 more at foster homes) 12 of them are staffy or staffy crosses.

Totally agree, unfortunately for the Staff there is a certain element of society who like them because they look 'hard' and unlike rotties fit into a small house better!! They are bred just to make a quick buck with no thought of inbreeding, personalities, actually the harder the better in some areas. The people buying the pup out the paper would not go to a rescue centre because quite honestly they would be declined, and they wouldn't have the fore-thought to save one!

I honestly don't know what the answer is, make a law that only registered and licensed breeders can breed a dog???? The youngsters such as the 0-3 month olds in rescue are usually actually born in the shelter from a rescue bitch. Very sad for the breed I've seen the best of the breed and the absolute worse.

Definately agree with this!! It's just awful! Is it possible to put a stop on breeding dogs except for the registered ones..isn't this the case with breeds such as the Shiba Inu's? You would probably still get some 'certain' people breeding their dogs but might help cut the ammount of litters being bred?

I'm not sure I follow regarding your link to shiba inu's I take it in order for them to have KC papers the breeder must be a registered breeder?? If this is the case unforunately these staffs are not KC registered, a pup can go for anything from £250 up and NOT have papers!! Which is what makes it so attractive to people to breed willy nilly!!

What I mean is that a friend of mine was looking for a Shiba Inu & she said they're really hard to get hold of because it seems that there are only a handful of breeders & all puppies that are sold cannot be used for breeding purposes & apparently you sign some kind of contract to say that you will not breed from them?? I don't know how accurate this is, I could be completely wrong..it was just what my friend told me..

I know exactly what you mean. Hubby and I are discussing getting a puppy but he would rather rescue so I've had a look online and seen pages upon pages of Staffs. We already have two so I initially wanted a different breed but with so many in the kennels, I couldn't find it in my heart to overlook them so we've got our eye on a few. We've seen a couple of puppies we like too, both aged 0-3 months. Hoping to get in touch and see if we can visit. Depends on what we decide to do really!

Very sad indeed. :(

This is something that most responsible breeders do, no matter what the breed. I used to do it with GSDs. Unfortunately the majority of staffies who end up in rescue are bred by people who have no concern who their pups go to, they are just in it for a fast buck. I don't know what the answer is, licensing breeders certainly doesn't seem to work.

Lots of responsible breeders have the no-breed clause but a lot of people don't care about registration or paperwork, they just want to make money off dogs.

Until the puppy buying public are better informed about the difference between a good responsible breeder and a backyard cash-hungry breeder, the situation will not change :(

this is totally my point too!!!
I have a staffy and think they are amazing dogs (pain in the bum too lol)
she is fab with people loves kids not too keen on dogs which is my fault but people are just over breeding!! they have bad press so people dont realise how good these dogs are!! most of the rescues have started putting them down because they are hard to rehome.
I got my dog neutered because im never going to breed from her as she is not registered and the main reason was because there is so much over breeding!! its is cruel!!
I had so many people asking when are you goin to breed her, its cruel not to let her have one litter!! arggg drives me mad!!
I wish some companies would use these dogs in adverts etc to show how good they really are it would be such a big help to the poor things!!
rescues are also strict on re-homing i would have no chance with working full time which is a shame cause I would love to rescue!!
