The Wildlife Bill which bans Stag Hunting in Ireland was passed by a 75 to 71 vote in the Dáil.

The Ward Union hunt will not be issued with a licence to hunt again.

I wonder if this is the start of a very slippery slope for Ireland?
 
At least it was a tight call.

There are politicians who said they were opposed to it but still voted it through...

Is there a list anywhere, or a video of it... it only mentions one or two in the news articles, but there were a good few.

If the puppy farm leglislation goes through, its going to cause havoc.... I am not for a second saying I support puppy farms, but the legislation is going to interfere with the way the hounds are kept.
 
Totally useless waste of government time aswell, why didn't they spend time putting work into the EU animal welfare act, which is desperately needed and deals with REGULATING instead of just rash, ill-thought blanket bans.
 
Check boards under the shooting/hunting section.

I don't support puppy forms either, FF are being very clever at using the greens as a lighting rod. The Greens are too think/desperate to notice this.

Nothing is going to change unless there is more resources given over to enforcing laws we already have. But of course politicians want to be seen bringing in sweeping changes when it suits them. It really worries me the influence that animal rights lobby in Ireland has on Gormless (small in number but very vocal). Wasn't Sargent before a member of an Irish sabs group?
 
It's a sad day for hunting in Ireland. Wonder will the jockeys threaten strike again if they move to ban all hunting?
 
Oh ,hunting weekends/holidays are big business in Eire..bloody Hell..the Ward Union are a "carted stag" hunt anyway,in between being let loose for a run they are royally kept as pets almost. We had a carted stag hunt down here in Kent years back, The Mid Kent Staghounds,once that folded down those old stags were free to roam and lived a good old age,courtesy of the farmers.

Talk about shooting themselves in the foot!
 
I've never understood the point of stag hunting. And must admit to thinking it's an uncessary 'sport'. So, sorry folks, I'm in favour of the ban.

That won't happen here though, I have no idea what the WUH intend to do with their stags, but they are a large herd of indigenous red deer. Who at one time were almost extinct.

Red deer, in the wild, can interbreed with a smaller breed of deer, Sika, if they aren't managed, there will definately be a decline in their numbers.

The Irish Deer Society (wildlife and welfare) support FACE, who helped set up the RISE campaign.
 
And horses, hounds and hunting are a huge part of Irish heritage and mark my words it will all disappear.

They'll come for shooting, they'll come for fishing. They already want to come for those, and for horse racing and even dog shows.

But animal abuse perpetrated by those who don't hunt, shoot or fish, race horses or show dogs - starvation, neglect, will still go on.

Oh absolutely - and I've enjoyed many a wonderful hour on the hunting field - as has my horse. However, hunting a fox with hounds has some legitimacy - whereas chasing something the size of a horse doesn't. You can merely stalk it and shoot it.

I totally agree, amymay. I hate staghunting, but am a staunch supporter of foxhunting. Many a time my OH has tried to reason with me about the pros of staghunting, but it just doesnt wash with me. I understand that deer numbers need to be controlled, but I dont think that chasing them with a pack of hounds is the right way to do it. I have no problem with a trained marksman going and shooting them, but IMO it is wrong that they should be chased. Whereas with a fox, they are so much smaller that it just isnt feasible to keep the numbers down by shooting.
 
I don't think that washes.. I think the fact of the matter is that the larger the animal, the bigger than problem people have with hunting it! Rabbits - not a bother. Foxes - hmm, you're pushing it. Stags? How could they. That's the way I think people evaluate it!

Not really JH. There has to be legitimacy to the act of the hunt. And chasing something with hounds for a few hours, when you can dispatch it quickly with a gun with no chase is just cruel.

Exactly. It has been proven time and again that trying to control the fox population with guns does not work - foxes are too clever, too quick, and invariably end up wounded, not dead because the marksmen are unable to get a clear enough shot. The very size of a deer contributes to it being an easier target for shooting - so then why chase it when you can quietly shoot it dead without it even knowing anything about it?

I dont eat venison because I dont actually like the idea of deer being killed full stop - but I do understand why it has to be done, even if it doesnt sit right with me. I cannot honestly say that I like the idea of the way a fox is chased and killed during a hunt, but it has been proven to be the most efficient and humane way of population control.
 
As far as I understand, the deer is not killed. When it has been cornered (not sure of the correct term) it is loaded back into the box and returned to the herd..
 
yes, Musto,as pointed out these stags after a bit of a run are boxed up to be taken home again to relax.Clearly it does`nt seem to do longterm harm as the old boys in mid Kent lived long lives afterwards. They are used to being handled in the same way cows or pigs are,so cannot see the harm in it at all.Certainly Eire needs tourism of any sort in it`s present economic decline.

Oh dont worry.. now Eire voted corectly in the EU referendum the EU will take care of every need and no need for nasty tourists with or without horses!!!.. sister is still there but niece over here working and im staying here as are the parents..
 
For all you horse lovers who enjoy stag hunting what would you say if I were to chase a horse with a pack of hounds/dogs? A sheep, perhaps too? Cattle?

Foxes are hunters, deer are prey animals just like horses, cattle etc. are also and suffer tremendous stress when chased. They have a similar mindset of the animals you adore but it is fine to chase them because why? It rakes in a bit of cash? Thrill of the ‘hunt’ regardless of the kill? Simply fun?

The bile spewed upon professional target stalkers/hunters/markspersons is ridiculous bias simply to put those who prefer to use that method in a bad light. There have been many cruel fox/stag hunting practices and incidents compared to the rare misplaced shots from professionals, people who should be wholly separated from the incompetents who go out blasting creatures at random. A good hunter has the animal dead before it knows you are there.

“All animals are equal but some are more equal than others”, true. But we, as the ‘more equal’ animal, should perhaps consider that statement several more times.

I have no problem with the hunting, shooting and fishing of most things. However I do think stalking is a far better way of killing deer, and surely the stag is not aware that its all a bit of fun? :rolleyes: The stress it must go through must be immense surely? And then for it not to die....and go through it all again at a future point no doubt?
I don't see the point.

So its like trail hunting but with added terror for an animal? Nice. I don't see the point of "hunting" something if you don't kill it.

Deer are hunted once in a lifetime, then they are used as part of the breeing herd for conservation of the Irish Red Deer (an endangered species). They've had several vet studies done on the stags which suggest they recover in 3-4 days much like a race horse does after running
