Stage fright... SJing....

Well, to put it bluntly didnt have the best of days yesterday, all came to a sticky end SJing, after a brilliant Dressage (35). G just seems to get complete stage fright SJing in new places... now other than getting out as much as possible to as many different venues as possible, anyone had any experiance and any tips?!

What was he doing just looking at the fences in horror as though he had never seen a jump in his life before? Owen used to be like that,in fact I could not even get him to canter he would just stand there gawping at everything! but he did get over it once he had been to lots and lots of little shows...
A calmer also helped him ( Chro Magnum from Horse health wessex which is fab) not because he is a hyper horse but because he gets worried and forgets to breath and think straight and turns into a statue! But he did get over it eventually

Really sorry to hear that. It has happened to me, so know how soul destroying it is. In my case though, it was partly rider error as well (not riding positively enough to make up for it being strange venue/fences etc). She jumped a clear round SJ with my trainer on board at the following week's event.
Can only suggest as much SJ as possible before your next event, and make sure you are riding as well as you ride at home.

Brill dressage though, my OH would have loved a score like that.

Pretty much Forrest, wasnt even backing off them, just came into a nice canter into first fence, gave him loads of time to look, and had very straight line, and he just got to it and almost suddenly realised it was there, and stopped, brought him round, really drove him into it, and he jumped it, second fence just wibbled into it, but had died off my leg COMPLETELY (was wearing spurs too) so just wobbled to a stop, again, jumped it second time. Thrid fence exactly the same. He has been TOWING me into fences at home, really forward and looking for them, letting me set him up and leave him to jump, and been 100%. Just almost cant cope with the new place and jumping at same time.... Def looking into a calmer too, as he sounds the same as Forrest, was blowing ehen came out, but not from being out of breath (if makes sense!?) almost panicky....
 
Thanks Fiona, yes I have got to do alot more work on me, also alot of work at home on getting him off leg quicker, although isnt realy a prob we have at home...

Awww thats such a shame! I wondered if you was there (I seem to remember you posting about it....) I went up to watch a friend (on a huge chestnut horse, dont know if you saw them!)

No advice, just a "remember hes a baby and he'll get better"

So sorry didn't go to plan - but as i said SJ was quite bright and was big open arena bit up and down.
I think you just have to keep at it get him out as much as possible and build as spookey fences as you can at home andkeep chnaging the position of them.
We go to arena where they do have WH ponies and the fneces have som uch under them to stopponies spooking its great training for Bud - water trays with ducks on, blue plastic, fake green grass fillers just all sorts. We got some advertising banners from McDonalds and used them few years ago make great fillers and very spookey...... it will get you used to riding him when he's backing off to.

What a shame honey, good dressage. All I can say is get him out SJ at as many different places as possible, it will all come good eventually...........

SSM, he says he wants to be donkeys live in boyfriend and live wild in a big field.....

Sorry it didnt go well so disheartening. Can only suggest to get out SJing on grass or outdoor arenas as much as poss.

She's on her way over now as we speak to collect him - I can see her trundling up the A46 at her own steady pace!!!!!!

She did well - decent enough Dressage & Sj; clear Xc -but he usually gets a shed load of time penalties, as he has a unique canter, I didnt hang around for results though, so I dont know exactly!
