Staining/creosoting stables

I've got six stable and a shed or two to creosote/creocoat again this year. Normally I do them by hand as I'm a bit of a perfectionist, but this year am in a sling and can't! People in the past have suggested using a sprayer - either purpose built or a weed sprayer. Have any of you used these, and do you get a good result?

I do mine by hand, my father had one of these for doing his fence to save time well I think he nearly gave himself a heart attack with the stress of it, the machine was not that easy to use not like it said on the tin lol !! ~So thats all I can go on further more he now paints the fence so that says it all, but others may have a different experience

I have tried using a sprayer and hated it - even more than I hate painting!

I am not a perfectionist so I put old feed sacks around the bottom of the wood and use a roller. My idea of painting is the biggest possible brush and slap it on!

I have also found that using about 1:4 parts old old car engine oil mixed with the creosote far better to stop any water soaking into the wood.

Creosote is now banned [EU] so I think you are talking about B&Q type water based coating. There are two qualities, one costs 5 times as much as the other, I use a roller, I go over all corners and overhangs with a brush, usually before so tricky bits might get two coats,

It's not banned, it's just very restricted as to who can get hold of it.
Farmers (for example) can still buy/use it.

Thanks for the replies. They don't sound very good do they! I can't go up a ladder this year in a sling - may have to get someone else up the top bit!

We finally ran out of creosote last year, and used somthing called creocoat that is the new version. It was ok, but has faded a lot this year. I may try the engine oil thing, as we have a garage, so have tons of old oil that we have to pay to have taken away!
